Cami Cain Obituary

Cami Marie Cain

March 12, 1987 - October 19, 2024

Cami Cain, Registered Nurse, Healthcare Advocate, Compassionate Caregiver, and Animal Lover, Dies at 37.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Cami Cain, who died on October 19, 2024 in Omaha, Nebraska. Cami was born in York, NE, on March 12, 1987. She is survived by her parents Richard and Jayne Cain, her sister Cassie Robinson (and spouse Paul Robinson and their 6-year-old daughter Gracie Jo Robinson), her brother Casey Cain, her twin sister Calli Cain, and her best friend who was like another sister, Mandi Behn. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, her three beloved cats, and many dear friends and colleagues.

Cami dedicated her life to helping others, working as a Registered Nurse with a passion for hospice care. Over the past 12 years, she cared for patients during their final stages of life, providing comfort, dignity, closure, and support to both them and their families. Her selflessness, kindness, and dedication to her profession were evident in the many accolades and awards she received, including her most recent honor at Methodist Hospital in Omaha for outstanding patient care. Through her work in hospice care, she witnessed many families faced with the sudden and unexpected loss of a loved one. She was a huge advocate for every adult having a living will prepared, regardless of age, arguing that it was one of the kindest gifts you can offer your family to help clarify your wishes to them.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Cami was a fierce advocate for animal rescues, environmental causes, and preventative healthcare. She participated in flu and COVID vaccine clinics, even appearing on local news in 2023 to encourage vaccinations in her community. She also shared her insights and compassion through her writing, including a blog she wrote for one of her 3 employers, the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) Hospice Care, during the COVID-19 pandemic. She attended grade school in Bird City, KS and Gibbon, NE; high school at Elkhorn, NE; and college at Morningside University in Sioux City, IA. She played clarinet in concert, pep, and marching bands from grade school through high school. She was a three sport athlete in high school, ran track in college, got very into biking and running half marathons the past several years, and was a huge women's sports enthusiast–she absolutely loved going to the Omaha Supernovas pro volleyball league with her best friend Mandi.

Cami was known for her joyful spirit, her commitment to helping others, and her ability to brighten the lives of everyone she met–even in the midst of their dark times. Behind her radiant smile though, she silently battled with depression, anxiety, and an addiction that left her in a lot of debt. Despite her family's love, support and attempts at interventions, Cami faced immense internal struggles that ultimately overwhelmed her. She wanted so badly to help everyone around her but was unable to receive the same love and support she so generously gave others. Her family and friends all thought she was doing so much better this past year, as she made plans to visit each of her 3 siblings in Washington, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. She was especially excited about Calli's move to Denver and was determined to get Calli in good enough shape to do some 14'ers (mountains) together. Her siblings hope to honor Cami's memory by partaking in these ventures together someday.

Her family also wants to honor Cami's legacy by encouraging others to prioritize mental health and seek help in times of crisis. They ask that everyone take time to learn the signs of depression, anxiety, risks for suicide, and to have open conversations about mental health. Cami's family hope to raise awareness about suicide prevention to help destigmatize the issue so that others may find the support they need, before it's too late.

A celebration of life with honors from the Nebraska Nurse Honor Guard will be held for family, friends, colleagues, and anyone lucky enough to have known Cami at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church (4200 N 204th St, Elkhorn, NE 68022). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations go to the Nebraska Humane Society in Cami's memory, in accordance with her living will. They also encourage donations be given to supporting suicide prevention or nonprofit hospice care services (e.g., the VNA -two causes close to her heart. Visitation will be Friday, October 25, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Reichmuth Funeral Home, 21901 W. Maple Rd., Elkhorn, NE.

What a caring and necessary obituary for Cami. Thank you so much for sending such a heartfelt message in the midst of crippling grief. Let's hope more can be as courageous as your family has been so a much brighter light can be brought to bear on suicide and the mental health challenges that unfortunately often lead to self harm. God Bless all of you and thanks for showing true love for others in the midst of your loss.
