It was hard for me not to cry reading this. know Matt from high school and I´m very sorry to hear about his passing. Matt was always kind to me and even went out of his way to give a ride home after baseball tryouts at Central. I remember we laughed the whole car ride due to me failing miserably at the tryouts. I wish I would have gotten to see before he passed. Rest in Peace brother.

Matthew's memorial caught my eye. While I don't know you or him, your family's struggle brought tears to my eyes. May you all find comfort in the memories of your beloved son and brother and may Matthew finally find the peace he so deserved. Thank you for sharing.

Matthew was a loving nephew for whom the external world was too complicated for him to navigate successfully. I am proud to know he was my nephew. I will miss his smile and his presence in my life.

Ms. Clifford, you are my shero! Today, I learned that while you might not know what to do when a loved one is hurting from mental illness, just hold on tight with all the love you can give. While that might not be enough everyday, someone will know you are doing all you can. So sorry for the loss of your precious child.

Martha and family, I was so very sorry to hear about your son Matthew. I also have a son struggling with this terrible disease and I understand all to well what a difficult thing that can be for the family. I pray that Matthew is now resting in peace and you can be at peace as well.

It had to have been quite the struggle for Matthew during those 25 years of his illness. And for his Mom Martha also, and for Jason. Rest in Peace now Matthew and peace to his family too.

Although I did not personally know Matthew, I offer you my deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers. I, too, have lost a son and now my grandson (also named Matthew) is dealing with an illness similar to that which plagued your son. He, too, excelled at soccer and academics and had a promising life before him when "the voices" also began talking to him. After his diagnosis he has been hospitalized several times is really struggling. I also sympathize with you as a mother as I see the difficulties my daughter-in-law encounters alone on a daily basis. I think I can understand your grief and hope you will find solace in knowing you did everything you could to make Matthew whole again.

My memories of Mathew are those of an elementary school student who was my son´s best friend. He was smart, talented in so many ways and a great person; truly a shining star that spread joy to those lucky enough to know him. May he rest in peace and peace to all of his family and friends.

I met Matt in 8th grade at Lewis & Clark. I was fortunate enough to become friends with him and thoroughly enjoyed his quick wit. Matt was extremely bright without making others feel less than him. He was the first person to expose me to David Letterman and so much music. He is the guy I think of when certain 90´s alternative rock songs are played.
We drifted apart after college and I wondered about him. He was a true friend and I will never forget him.
From the time I met him, his mom was very involved and I am not surprised by her unconditional love and support. His brother Jason was equally intelligent, talented and kind - and Matt adored him.
My heart goes out to Matt´s family and friends who are grieving.

I got to know Matt in our college years. While I did not know him well, he was a huge part of our social circle at the time. He was funny, caring and intelligent. Unfortunately this was also at the beginning of his issues with mental health. I appreciate the absolute honesty of Matt´s obituary and the impact mental health has on family and friends, but most importantly someone like Matt. My thoughts are with Matt, his family and his close friends as they grieve his loss.

I did not know this young man, but your obituary is absolutely beautifully written, and I think it will help many people. I am a clinician and have had a number of patients and family members who have faced this struggle with mental health. God bless you all and prayers to all.

God bless this precious mother and family. I don't know you at all but your obituary is a masterpiece of openness and compassion for your son. These things can not be explained and why you had to endure this is a mystery. You did what you had to do ...good job. Rest. Prayers for you...bless you all.
