We have fond memories of Max. As our three boys approached Lincoln NE High School Max was the figure to look up to. Always have a friendly smile and conversation for us. And I think Carolyn knew Chelys way back to the Wesleyan days. Our prayers are with you and we know we will see Max again.

We became acquainted with Max the summer of 1948.He was attending the University Wyoming Summer Prigram. I have never seen anyone who loved to travel to the Snowy Range Mountains. They returned for 4 years. Thoroughly enjoyed being with Max and his family. Will be missed by all of us.

I will always remember MAX as a great Coach and friend. His one arm push ups were something I could never do. His disipline is something we need more of these days' rest in peace and may God be with you.

Max had an understated style of leadership and influence that seems typical of his generation and the combat veterans of WW II. He, like a couple of other coaches I had over the years, had a great deal of influence on my self-confidence and work ethic. Too few like him.

I had the incredible fortune of being on the first LNE Cross Country team to qualify for the State Tournament. The football team all had t-shirts that said Bauer's Boys and we got t-shirt's that said Max's Men. He laughed and said we would get our roadwork done trying to outrun the football players. No matter where our paths crossed Coach Hester always wanted to know how I was and what was going on in my life. I will forever be a legend in north Lincoln and someone who helped mold my future. I wish that the family's pain quickly be replaced by the wonderful memories of Coach Hester

Once, I was asked to list the three or four teachers, who I thought had had a major influence on my later life. Coach Hester was on that list, as I’m sure he would be on the same list for many others who have passed through Northeast High School.
In 1985, Max, as program chairman, asked me to speak at a meeting of the Bethany Lions Club. I did not know, until I arrived at the meeting, that my daughter, Lorna, was also on the program. She had been sponsored by the Bethany Lions Club to attend the Nebraska Girls State, and was there to present her report. It was such a nice surprise for both of us.
It is impossible for me to think of Northeast High School without thinking of Max. I consider myself fortunate to have known him and to have had is guidance.
God bless Max and all whose lives he touched.

Max was a swell guy, a good leader and an icon from my youth. He always treated everone fairly and equally. Used to see him taking walks after retirement and he even remembered me several years after graduation. Condolences to the family. Thanks, Max for all you taught us about life. LNE class of '64.

What a great guy and super teacher, he will be missed. I last spoke to Max nine years ago at our 45th HS reunion where we joked and laughed about the early days in the 1950's. Max remembered all of our names. A remarkable guy. My condolences to the Hester family. You should be proud.

I'm sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you. I remember Max officiating and being on the sideline crew at the Nebraska games. Although I think my father knew him personally,I just liked him because he always seemed to be "old school" like my dad was, and he just appeared to be the kind of man who would "tell you the straight story to your face". As I get older the memories are farther away and so I might be wrong, but I remember him as refereeing my wrestling matches in high school. I didn't realize Cliff was a son-in-law, but that also indicates to me that Max raised his children well, because they made good choices when it came to spouses, and they then did a great job raising their own children (Jon) to be truly good people. I pray that you can rejoice when you reflect back on the good memories that Max brought into your lives, and the lives of others.
