I had the privilege of caring for Neil for the last 3 1/2 months of his life. I often told Neil that I wish I could sit with him and hear his life's experiences and wisdom. I saw segments of time that he would be very clear in his thoughts and speech, able to communicate exactly what he was thinking or an opinion. Neil was my favorite. I told him every shift I worked. I also jokingly told him I was his favorite care giver! After several attempts at getting him to say my name, I am happy to report that he was able to do so about a half a dozen times. Each time, I would do a silly "happy dance" to which he would laugh out loud. I would go into his room at the beginning of my shift to let him know I was caring for him that night and pat his chest, give him a kiss on the cheek and tell him, "now it's your turn. I'd offer my cheek and he'd give me a kiss, to which I'd respond with....another "happy dance." As I go in to work my shift tomorrow night, I will visit his room. I will look in his closet, remembering when I "hid" a shirt in the back of the closet for him because he said he didn't like it and wander aimlessly around until the tears stop coming. I loved and cared for your husband/father/grandfather/brother and want you to know, when I was his care giver, he knew he was loved and safe and cared for. I will miss him so much.....
