John & Regie Tesk
March 3, 2010
Bob Vining will always be remembered by Regie and John Tesk as a great, compassionate, caring human being who was blessed ( and blessed others ) with his exceptionally keen intellect and wit. He became a blessing to our family from the first moments that we met. I, John, was looking to change research positions and career by leaving the nuclear materials research field & enter the emerging science-based field of biomaterials which was in its early days of growth and change. We lived very close to each other and in response to my letter of inquiry to him about employment he came to interview me at my home…an example of how careful he was about whom he worked with, observing both me and my wife first hand …apparently we passed the test. He hired me while he was Director of Research with a dental company in Chicago, prior to his leaving to return to Creighton University. He took a great chance and hired me though I had no dental background whatever. However, he gave me an education in dentistry while carpooling to work. He and Rosemary offered us more by becoming our friends. We loved them and respected them and their wonderful daughters. Over the years Bob continued to give of himself and mentored me in my career. He generously gave time and advice, even serving as head of the visiting committee for the Polymers Division after I joined the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). Because of the breadth of knowledge and administrative skills that Bob had imparted to me I had the great experience of becoming Group Leader at NBS for what had become the most famous dental research group in the world, without Bob none of this would have happened.
As the years passed the separation of distance kept us from seeing each other with frequency. Yet, it was always a consolation for us to know that, in this unforgiving and often cruel world, there was a man of the stature and character of Robert V. Vining, who was neither cruel, nor unforgiving, nor harsh; just a good and kindly man.
We will forever miss him. Someone precious has left this world to join those whom God must love very much and we, who remain, recognize God’s love in His gift to us in the person of Robert Vining.
Our condolences go out to Jane and David James and all in the Vining family on your loss. How comforting it must be to you to know his gain now, his love for you, and how well he is again.

Robert 'Doc' Vining was one of the most noble, kind and funny men to enter my life. He was a superb role model always having time for friends and family. We're richer for having known him and poorer for his passing. His life was a gift and an example to all of us.

There are no words to express the gratitude and pride that I hold deep within me for having had the privilege and honor of being your daughter. You believed in me, before I ever believed in myself. You had a tremendous amount of patience and innate kindness, always leading by your own example. Every day and every night I dream of you, wishing you could be here with me. Yet, you'll always be mine, mine for a lifetime, and someday, I believe, we will be together again. I love you Dad, my heart is breaking. You have had such a positive and significant impact on so many lives. I miss you so much. Your loving daughter, Jane

Bob, you were always teaching. You not only taught dentistry, but by example, how we should treat those around us. You set the standards high, but not before meeting and exceeding those standards yourself. Thank you so much for allowing me to be one of your students, a poor one for sure, but a student none the less. Love, Dave

What a great legacy this man has left to all. My brother had the good fortune of marrying his daughter Jane, my sister-in-law whom I love dearly. I only met Bob once, in his home, and was so favorably impressed by his kindness and demeanor. I look forward to seeing Bob since learning from Dave & Jane that he had given his life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Never has a man given so much of himself to so many. It was an honor to have been able to call him "Grandpa." I am so thankful for all he has done for my siblings and me. We are truly brokenhearted.
