Sidney Case Obituary

CASE-Sidney Russell, born April 19, 1939 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts to Russell C. Case and Gladys M. Case, left this world to join his Lord on November 28 after a valiant struggle with cancer. A musician and music educator, Sidney devoted his life to his immediate and extended family, his students and serving God with his life and music. As a young man, Sidney mastered the violin and played with the Springfield (MA) Youth Orchestra. He studied sacred music and music education at King's College in Briar Cliff Manor, New York graduating in 1960. He earned his Master's degree at the University of Nebraska in 1967 and continued into the doctoral fellowship program at the Boston University School of Fine Arts. Sidney served God in everything he did and particularly in his music ministries at churches in Nebraska and the northeast. He served as organist and music director at St. Martin's Episcopal Church and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska; Tabernacle Congregational Church in Salem, Mass., St. John's Episcopal Church in Beverly Farms, MA; St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Ridgefield, CT; St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Ridgefield; Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville, NY and presently at South Salem Presbyterian Church in South Salem, NY. His professional life was devoted to introducing young people to the joys of music performance. He taught music in public schools beginning in 1960 at J.S. 123 in the Bronx. Horace Mann Junior High and North High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Next he became director of Music and Art for the Swampscott, Massachusetts Public Schools. Since 1984, he has been Coordinator of Performing Arts for the Scarsdale, New York Union Free School District. An accomplished musician, Sidney performed organ concerts in the Midwest as well as the Northeast. He played the organ to accompany professional artists in concert. He also directed musical theatre productions on both the semi professional and amateur level. In addition, he was the director of several community choruses, which performed major sacred works in concert. Sidney leaves behind his wife of forty-one years, Donna (Garnaas) Case, son Christopher and daughters Elizabeth and Emily, all of Ridgefield, CT. He leaves them with memories of his love, devotion and his passion for life. His strong faith, positive outlook and gracious manner endeared Sid to all he encountered. His wife and children were the joy of his life but his family extended beyond his five brothers and two sisters to their entire families. Sidney will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on in the lives of his children, students, former students and colleagues.

While listening to organ music last evening, I was taken back in time some 60 years to a pew at First Baptist Church in Omaha. The highlight of my Sunday mornings was listening to Mr. Case play wonderful spirit-filled classical music on the pipe organ. His choice of music and exuberant style were a wonderful introduction to classical organ music and a glimpse into the sounds that magnificent pipe organ was capable of producing with a talented organist at the controls. To this day, it still leaves me with goosebumps and fond memories. I was a child back then, totally in awe of Mr. Case and his abilities. He certainly had an impact on my life, and I hope to meet him in heaven.

Mr. Case was such a fine man and a wonderful teacher. His passing diminishes all of us who knew and loved him. He instilled a sense of passion and a joy for music in all his students. He taught us how to believe in ourselves, and we made such beautiful music.

I learned other lessons from him: teamwork, persistence, and a desire for excellence. Those lessons gave me a great start in life and I am so thankful.

He touched so many people. My condolences to Mrs. Case, Christopher, Emily and Elizabeth. I am so sorry for your loss.

Sid was one of the most influencial people in my life and I will always carry a little of his enthusiasm for life and his understanding of excellence with me. Over the years, I have been very fortunate to have Sid keep in touch with us. His son, Chris, was going to Purdue in recent years so he and his family dropped by a couple of times on their way to Indiana. I also got to see him in Omaha a year ago or so. He really hadn't changed and still looked great, had the same long hair he was brushing out of his face at that time. Chuck Saylors called me on Thursday afternoon (thanks Chuck) and told me Sid had died and his funeral was the next morning, so I hopped a plane that night and went to the funeral the next morning. On the way there I was thinking about why I felt the need to go and I realized two things. First, I knew Sid would come no matter what happened to me and secondly, I needed to go for me. I needed to reconcile this wonderful person and why he had such a profound influence on so many of us. The funeral was filled with music (of course) and Paul Surface sang in the choir. It was a beautiful service and Donna and the kids were very gracious and strong. Paul said something that I will leave you with. He said, "Mr. Case empowered everyone around him. That is what made him so special." My best from Pam and I to all of Sid's family and friends.

Words cannot express the deep loss to all of us who knew this wonderful teacher, friend, and mentor. Sid Case has been an inspiration to me since North High School days when he gave me a chance to join the choir even though I couldn't sing a note. But I got the opportunity to have a dancing part in the grand production of "Camelot" and I had the privilege to experience the arts under his guidance and direction. Sid and Donna became dear friends and have stood by me every stage of my life. They have graciously opened their hearts and family to me and my loved ones...ever present with laughter and encouragement. Heaven is a much better place because of Sid's presence and this world has lost a great and dedicated servant of the Lord. There is joy in that we can carry on his great legacy of music, the arts, and love for life in the Lord's name each and every day. "O LORD, how manifold are thy works. In wisdom hast thou made them all. The earth is full of thy riches!!!" Psalm 104:24

Blessings and love to Donna, Christopher, Emily, and Elizabeth

I just found out about the passing of Mr. Case. He was my music teacher at North High School and was always considered the "coolest" teacher ever. I remember how he wore his hair long when no one in the school was suppose to, and he always would give you passes to leave school early. But on a more serious note, he was one of the nicest, most dedicated teachers I ever had. He always made you so excited to be in his class and in any musicals that he was directing. We will all miss him very much and hope his family knows how much he was adored during his stay in Nebraska. Our thoughts are with his family as this very sad time. Trish Cockle Billotte

I cannot begin to express my sadness at Sid's passing on to another life, but gladness for him to be free and at home.

I remember the wonderful times with Sid & Donna so many years ago in New England.

I rejoice for his wonderful legacy--his children, his teaching, his music making and the joy he shared with all of us.

I send my love to Donna, his children and his family. He was really just a very, very special person. His smile alone was worth a million dollars.

I feel very fortunate to have known him here, and look forward to seeing him again.

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of Sidney Case.

Quite simply, he was the most influential educator in my life. His gift to all of his students was the enduring appreciation of music; the Arts and striving for academic excellence. I am profoundly grateful and privileged for having been one of his music students.

My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Case and their children; family and friends for the passing of this wonderful, gifted man.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

It was with great regret and sorrow that I read of Mr. Case's passing this morning. I fondly remember our days at North High School, Madrigals, the Aurora, and the musicals. I also remember and continue to appreciate the weekend you hosted me in 1971 during my basic training at Pease AFB.

Mr. Case has been a profound influence on me throughout my life and also on the lives of my wife and children, who never met him. My three sons each have been professional singers and entertainers in college, at Worlds of Fun, shows at Branson, Missouri, on cruise ships, and in Los Angeles. I helped teach them to sing correctly through drills and techniques Mr. Case taught me. Although they have had their own trainers, each of them is well familiar with Mr. Case -- the best. When we were first in the Air Force, my wife was assigned a junior high chior, even though she had no music training. Again, using the drills and tools I learned from Mr. Case, she produced a very good choir. She remains a strong advocate of these tools to this day.

I have thought of Mr. and Mrs. Case many times through the years. I am very happy to learn of your children and of his dedication to the Lord. Please accept my deepest sympathy and know I will be praying for you.
