Anthony Zazzara Obituary

MORRISVILLE >> Anthony ""Tony"" Zazzara, 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton, N.Y.

He was born Nov. 10, 1932 in Lyons, N.Y., the youngest of seven children of the late Peter and Irene (Rago) Zazzara. As a youth, he was known by neighbors on his newspaper route as having an inventive personality and quick wit; something that he used later in life to torment countless waiters and waitresses.

He is a graduate of Lyons High School; he earned a bachelor of arts at Rider University, where he was president of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Anthony proudly served his country in the US Army and was honorably discharged. He then went on to receive his masters of science at University of Rochester and began teaching high school in Lyons, N.Y.

On Aug. 22, 1959 Anthony was united in marriage to Joan R. Petrus of Newark, N.Y. The couple moved to Rome, N.Y. where Anthony continued his teaching career at Rome Free Academy. He later accepted a faculty position at Morrisville State College, became a tenured professor, chairman of accounting, and served as the president of the Faculty Student Association. He retired and received professor emeritus in 1995.

Anthony served as Eaton Town Supervisor from 1993 to 2001 and was recognized for helping establish the Crouse Community Center and the construction of senior living apartments in Morrisville. Over the years, Anthony was a charter member of the Smithfield Eaton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SEVAC); an active member of the Morrisville Lions Club; the Elks Lodge, Oneida; and the Masonic Lodge, Morrisville. In Anthony's leisure time, he enjoyed visiting his children, cheering on his grandchildren, and playing golf with the notorious ""Fearsome-Foursome"" at Seven Oaks golf course in Hamilton.

Surviving are his wife of over 57 years, Joan (Petrus) Zazzara; his children, Karen and Jeffrey Bombard of Tupper Lake, N.Y.; Peter and Cindy Zazzara of Manlius, N.Y.; Gregory and Hong Zazzara of San Jose, Calif.; Lynne Ann and Brian Sprinkle of Landenberg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Samantha, Michael, Natalie, Greyson, and Baden; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 31 Cedar St., Morrisville. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call on Tuesday, from noon to 2 p.m., prior to the service.

Contributions in Mr. Zazzara's memory may be made to the Morrisville Lions Club, P.O. Box 445, Morrisville, N.Y. 13408 or SEVAC, P.O. Box 1030, Morrisville, N.Y. 13408.

Just a few weeks ago, I was mentioning Mr. Zazzara. I used to be his paper boy back when he moved to Rome and lived in a duplex apartment on Charles Street. He was never one of my teachers, but I always remember him. My Sympathy to all his family.

My condolences to the family. My wife and I both had him as our accounting teacher at SUNY Morrisville. Tony had such a passion for teaching and was very inspiring.
