Ralph Vatalaro Obituary

CANASTOTA >> Ralph Vatalaro, 79, of 7112 New Yorker Ave., Canastota, died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at his home with his loving family by his side.
He was born on Aug.18, 1935, in Utica, a son of Ralph, Sr. and Lillian Nicotera Vatalaro.
Ralph spent his early years in Utica, graduating from Proctor High School and later graduating from Utica College in 1957 with a degree in journalism. He married Judith A. Galton on July 2, 1960 in Canastota. They lived in Rotterdam, N.Y. for the next 27 years where their family grew to include five daughters. After retiring, Ralph and Judy moved to Brant Lake, the summer home known as "5-of-a-kind" that they cherished, and lived there for the next 20 years. Ralph lived in Canastota for the last four years of his life.
Ralph was employed at the New York State Labor Department and the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) in Albany as executive director for 32 years, retiring in 1990. Upon retiring from PERB he was the director and adjunct professor of industrial relations at LeMoyne College.

Ralph enjoyed spending much time with his children and grandchildren. He was happiest driving his boat on Brant Lake often with a few grandchildren in tow. He loved spending winters in Marco Island with his wife and close friends. He volunteered at St. Teresa Church in Brant Lake where he and Judy cleaned and maintained the grounds for many years. Ralph was also a lifelong avid New York Yankees fan watching nearly all of the 162 games each year.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Judy, of 55 years and five daughters and sons-in-law, MaryEllen and Michael Budd of New York, N.Y., AnneMarie and Kevin Knightly of New Canaan, Conn., Liz and Bill Neville of Londonderry, N.H., Catherine and Christopher Gallagher of Hopkinton, Mass., and Jennifer and Sean Nagle of Miami, Fla. Judy and Family, Just now learned of your husband's passing. You might remember my parents Charlie and Sadie Sofia, Albany, N.Y. where you and Ralph were our tenants many years ago. When my father passed in 2005 you and Ralph left a heartfelt message to my family. I will hold dear fond memories of days gone by. God Bless You and your family. May Ralph rest in peace. Our sympathies are with your family. I was saddened to learn of Mr. Vatalaro passing.

Years ago, as a "kid", wondering around Brant Lake Estates, Mr. V was one of the few adults who always took the time and showed a genuine interest in us "kids", perhaps he was just wondering what trouble we were up to. After you all moved, I missed running into him and your family on our return visits to stay with my folks.

He was a great man and will be missed my many.

Before I even met Mr. Vatalaro, Jolene's grandfather, Mr. Dominelli, would say what a smart and good man Ralph Vatalaro was. We are very sad to hear about his loss. Mrs. Vatalaro and the girls are in our thoughts and prayers. He truly had a gift to be able to converse with anyone about anything. When seeing him, he would refer to The Yankees, or a work related conversation we had a year before. He was a great man and he will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.

I send my condolences to Aunt Judy and family, and to myself, as he was my favorite Uncle. Uncle Pete was special, to me, all my life. He was more like a big brother. I can't believe he's gone, but, we can't be selfish. Be with the others who left before you. I love you. Sandra

Dear Judy, daughters and grandchildren;
Annette and I offer our deepest sympathy for this critical time. I am including a few comments you may not be fully aware of. Ralph and I met 70 years ago when we were selected by Mary St. and Albany St. schools to go to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame baseball game. We later became friends and teammates in the 7th grade at Proctor High School. I often joked that it took 6 years for us to get out of High school. We won city basketball championships in 8th and 9th grade for Proctor in Utica and also in 10th grade for the East Utica Boys Club. In 10th grade we formed a Kiwanis B team in baseball with sponsors and uniforms etc. Ralph was Best Man at Annette and my wedding in 1957. He started the monthly dinner meetings amongst the boys which later became the Proctor Boys dinners. Ralph also started the winter re-unions at Marco Island and Florida which continue to this day. What a great friend to have after 70 years with an occasional teasing but never a harsh word. My emotions have rune high since I received word of his passing last Thursday evening and I thank God for such a friendship. I am sorry I never brought the photo album of the famous Bormio, Italy ski and stag trip in 1994 which has some great photos of Ralph and Larry and Franny and Tony Nicoters. I will treasure that and all our times together.
God bless you and your family and we thank God for all the memories.
