Alison Mackenzie Ruzicka

1927 - 2017

Alison Mackenzie Ruzicka, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on April 13, 2017, in Savannah after a short illness. Alison led a vibrant, long and full life, infused with compassion and generosity for the many people she loved and touched along the way.

Alison was born in Boston on August 23, 1927, to Evelyn (Toulmin) and James C. Mackenzie. She graduated from Chapin School and earned a degree in music from Smith College. Later, she earned an associate degree in nursing from Athens Technical College. During her career of service, Alison worked at the United Nations, Radio Free Europe, the Environmental Protection Agency, the office of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, as well as the Family Life Enrichment Center in Watkinsville, Georgia.

She met her husband, Francis (Frank) Ruzicka (d. 2003), in Paris, France while she was touring abroad and he was studying painting in Italy. They had three children, and lived in New York City and Columbus, Ohio, before settling in Athens, Georgia, where she lived since 1976.

In recent years, Alison enjoyed participating in programs through Elder Hostel and traveled to England and India, where she worked in Mother Theresa's orphanage. She also enjoyed annual trips to the beach, where she spent extended time with her children and grandchildren.

Alison is survived by her two sons, Jan and Peter, her daughter, Kristi, grandchildren Celia and Ellis as well as several nieces and nephews.

A private celebration will be held at a future date.
