Charles Braucher Obituary

Charles Landis Braucher, Sr., was born September 20, 1922 in Halifax, Pennsylvania, to John Braucher and Abigail Landis Braucher. He often said he had a Tom Sawyer childhood playing on the Sesquehanna River at the foot of Peter's Mountain along the Appalachian Trail.

Dr. Braucher was a veteran of World War II, serving in Marseilles, France in a radio relay station.

At the end of the war, he joined the Air National Guard as a medical officer. He served for thirty-one years, last serving at the 165 TAC Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. He retired as a Lt. Colonel.

Dr. Braucher studied at Aberdeen Scotland (King's College of Scotland) Pennsylvania College of Pharmacy and Science, the University of Nebraska, and earned his PHD at Purdue University. He joined the Pharmacy College of Georgia in 1958, retiring in 1988 as emeritus professor of Pharmacy Care Administration. He also taught at Southwestern State College of Oklahoma.

The hallmark of Charlie's life was his contentment and joy. This was fed by his Faith in God and his endless love for his wife Sara. He shared this joy with everyone who met him through his constant smile.

Dr. Braucher loved Athens, Georgia, and believed in serving the community. He served as Chairmen of Athens Regional Hospital Board, Chairmen of the Athens Board of Mental Health, the Northeast Georgia Boys Scouts Council earning the Silver Beaver Award, Chairmen of the Athens Board of Public Health Center. He was appointed by Governor George Busbee to the State of Georgia Advisory Council for Mental health, and to the Commission for Men's Health.

A lifetime Methodist he was a faithful member of Athens First Methodist Church where he served as usher, as well in many roles over the years.

Dr. Braucher is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sara Karrh Braucher and his son Dr. Charles L. Braucher, Jr. (Chuck and Karen), of Athens, his daughters, Cynthia Skove (Matthew) Eatontown, NJ, Anne Mauldin (Kenneth) in Athens, Laura Braucher Dudley of John's Creek, GA, and Kristin Bradford (Lee) of Ft. Collins, CO., fourteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, Carrie, Lauren, Sara Katherine, John, Christianne, Michelle, Stephanie, Elizabeth, Luke, Landis, Hunter, Jackson, Wyatt, Kate, Jones, Maddie, and Emma Grace.

The family would like to thank the Oaks of Athens, Gentiva Hospice and Christopher's Bridge for excellent care given to Dr. Braucher for the past few years. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA 30601, or to the University of Georgia Pharmacy School Scholarship Fund.

A service of remembrance will be held at First Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 2 o'clock.

One of he most important Professors ever at UGA College of Pharmacy. A great teacher and encourager. If you were at a meeting and he saw you, he would come over and shake your hand; and would want to know how you were doing and how was your family. He would asked me "how is Virginia-my wife". He never forgot her name. He was the students best friend. Without his encouragement, I would probably never would have earned my Doctorate in 1974.

I met "Doc" at the Oaks last June. I sat next to him at meals and he was a funny gentleman. I remember talking about First Methodist Church and the organist from 45 years ago. How he talked about your singing. He loved you very much.

In my eyes he was and is larger than life. He was my mentor in 1971 in the work study program at UGA as a terrified freshman. He went way beyond what was required. He became my friend and guide my first year at UGA. I believe he is the reason I gained the confidence needed to be successful at Georgia. It was evident how important his family was to him as he was always sharing with me the things he would do with y'all. I know he will be greatly missed for he was a great man. I will be praying for peace and comfort from the Lord for the family.
