Charles Noll Obituary

Charles Harding Noll, 90, formerly of Waukegan passed away on Saturday, October 20 at his home in Bogart, GA. He was born February, 19, 1922 at his parents' home in Waukegan, IL. He graduated from Waukegan High School in June 1939. He attended Northwestern University but ended up deferring his degree to enlist in the Army Air Corps in World War II where he attended Reed University in Oregon to attain a degree in Pre-meteorology. After becoming a Second Lieutenant and receiving his Silver Navigation Wings from Hondo Army Air Field in Texas. He was on active duty until December 13, 1945 but continued to serve in the reserves until 1958. After the war he went to work for Johns Manville as an industrial engineer in Waukegan, IL. and earned his degree in Political Science at Northwestern University. After 10 years at Johns Manville he left and went into business with his uncles. He returned to the Waukegan Johns Manville plant in 1966 and was transferred to the Winder, GA plant in 1972. He worked there until he retired in 1987.
He was a 32nd degree Mason. He also enjoyed membership as an Elk in the Elks Club for 39 years both in Waukegan, IL and Athens, GA.
He is survived by his long-time companion Peggy Wall; by his children, Christy Noll of Bogart, GA, William (Janet) Noll of Wheeling, IL, Cheryl (Mark) Hatzung of Wayne, MI and Diana (Bill) Ragan of Augusta, GA; eight grandchildren: Jonathan and Robert Noll, Lauren (Mark) Maniora, Scott (Jenelle), Ryan and Staci Hatzung, and William and Charles Ragan. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Keith) Mitchell and brother Leonard (Pat) Noll.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marie Noll, son Robert Noll, his first wife Anna Herring Noll, and is second wife Susan Nelson Noll.

Chuck was one of approximately 15,000 Navigators who received their training at the Hondo Army Air Field in Hondo, Texas. The Tex Hill Wing of the Commemorative Air Force is collecting the names and bios of these Cadets. I was fortunate to have Chuck as a mentor and friend. He and Peggy were a great team who enhanced each others lives and the lives of those around them. We will all miss Chuck and celebrate his time with us.
