John P. Sedgwick Jr.

Athens, Georgia - John P. Sedgwick Jr., 79, died this Memorial Day at 4:35 pm in Athens, Ga. Dr. Sedgwick was born in New England and was educated at Exeter, Williams, and Harvard, majoring in History and Art History, eventually coming to Athens in the sixties to teach art history at the University of Georgia until he retired. An accomplished writer and thinker, he was the author of, among others, Discovering Modern Art, a book that was used nationwide in major universities for many years. Dr. Sedgwick had also distinguished himself as an artist in New York during the fifties and early sixties, and continued to produce work until he died. His last work concerned itself with the cycles of Western history as reflected in its art, an absorbing interest that preoccupied him for the last two decades of his life. He is survived by his sons, Nile and Daniel, his brothers David and Tom, and his ex-wife Charlalee. Instead of flowers, his wish was that remembrances be sent as donations to Amnesty International.
