Max Carnes Obituary

Commerce - Mr. Max Willard Carnes, Sr., age 89, of Commerce, died Thursday, July 27, 2006, at his residence. Mr. Carnes was born in Rabun County to the late, Virgil Austin and Bertha May Dickerson Carnes. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce and owner of Carnes Construction. Mr. Carnes was also a member of the Hudson Lodge #294 F & AM. He was a member of the board of directors of the Georgia Highway Contractors Association in 1974, 1975, and 1979. Mr. Carnes was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Carnes is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Russell Carnes. He is survived by a daughter, Pamela C. Barnett of Commerce; two sons, Max W. Carnes, Jr. of Baldwin and William C. Carnes of Villa Rica; four sisters, Floy M. Underwood of Lilburn, Sue Smith of Athens, Kitty Vinson of Dillard, and Carolyn Brewer of Clayton; a special friend, Betty Westbrooks of Danielsville; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 29, 2006, at 2 PM, from the First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Dr. David Bowen officiating. Interment will be in the Jackson Memorial Gardens. Flowers are optional or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Methodist Church of Commerce.
