Michael Steinborn Obituary

Michael Herschel Steinborn, 78, of Athens, passed away peacefully at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center surrounded by family following a short battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

Born in Mt. Clements, Michigan, Michael was a son of the late Leonard Steinborn and Evelyn Kaback Steinborn Brown. He attended Tucson High School in Arizona. Then, Michael served in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War. After college, Mike worked as a Respiratory Therapist at St. Joseph's Hospital, Tucson. Mike moved to Athens in 1975 to become the department head over Cardio Pulmonary Services at Athens General Hospital for 14 years. During that time, Mike started the Respiratory Therapy School at Athens Tech. Then he served as a Respiratory Therapist and RN at St. Mary's Healthcare system. He retired from there after 23 years, having spent his last 4 1/2 years as a Home Health Hospice Nurse.

Michael was a Jewish believer in Jesus Christ. He was a faithful and loving husband and father and good friend. He and his wife were foster parents of 51 children. Mike also volunteered for The March of Dimes. He was a founding Co-Director of the Master Academy of Fine Arts, Athens. Most recently, Mike served on the Leadership Team of Celebrate Recovery at Living Hope Church. He loved helping people heal from past hurts, hang-ups and habits and grow in their relationship with Christ. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him for his sense of humor, quick wit, his openness to share his wisdom and his willingness to always help others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian Allen Steinborn and Shelby Squire Steinborn and brother, David Mordecai Steinborn. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Phyllis Ray Steinborn; two children, Sonja Lynn Steinborn Rosenberg (Jeff) and Eva Leigh Steinborn; three siblings, Jerry Steinborn (Marilyn), Maxine Szmulewitz (Armend) and Mark Steinborn; sisters-in-law, Jennifer Ray and Rebecca Taber (Freeman); one grandson, Grant Steinborn and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 3:00 pm at Living Hope Church, 2150 Lexington Road, Athens, GA 30605 with Dr. David Holt officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 until 3:00 pm at the church. Masks will be provided for all attendants. Burial will be on Monday, February 29, 2021 at 2:00pm EST at Fredonia United Methodist Church in Five Points, Alabama.
