Alfred Robbins Obituary

Alfred Hargrave "Hawk" Robbins, 85, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Chester on Aug. 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Alfred Hargrave Robbins and Annie Draper Crow Robbins. His wife, Septemia Jordan Grant Robbins, preceded him in death. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Allen Wolfe officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester.
Hawk was a graduate of Chester High School, where he was a letterman in football, basketball and track. He was a member of the 1945 Shrine Bowl Football Team. He attended Riverside Military Academy and was drafted into the Navy, where he served aboard the USS Forrest Royal. After serving in the Navy for two years, he attended Georgia Military College.
He worked in the insurance business all of his life, beginning with Life of Virginia in Winnsboro. He moved to Chester, where he worked for Bagby Insurance Company, which became Hawk Robbins Insurance. After retirement he continued in the insurance business with Farmers Mutual.
He was active in civic organizations, including serving as Governor of the Chester Moose Lodge, President of Dixie Youth League Baseball and President of the Chester Cotillion. He served as a long-time member of the Chester City Council and was a lifetime member of Bethel United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed attending games throughout his life at Clemson University.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Eugene Robbins of Griffin, Ga., Jeff Robbins of Kingstree, S.C., Joe Robbins of Escondido, Calif., Margaret Hardy of Spartanburg and Sue Murray of Anderson. He was preceded in death by two siblings who died in childhood, Paul Robbins and Wilson Robbins.
He is survived by a son, Alfred Hargrave "Fred" Robbins of Chester; a daughter, Anne Robbins Vestal of Greensboro, N.C. and her husband Eric; grandchildren Marshall Brown Vestal and Jordan Elizabeth Vestal; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who cared for him, especially in the last two weeks, at Palmetto Health Heart Hospital.
