Albert Flores Obituary

Flores, Albert W., PhD
Albert W. Flores, professor emeritus of philosophy at Cal State Fullerton, died January 13, 2017. He was 70. The educator, who joined the faculty in 1982, chaired the Philosophy Department from 1993 to 1996 and again from 2003 to 2006, and led the Academic Senate from 1993 to 1995. In addition to being honored with the University's 2001-02 Outstanding Professor Award and the Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award in 2008, Flores was honored by the Orange County Board of Supervisors as the county's Outstanding Hispanic Educator in 1995. He also coordinated the University's Health Professions Program from 1989 to 1993.
The Cleveland, OH native earned his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy at Cleveland State University, where he excelled as a high jumper, achieved All-American recognition, and is enshrined in their Athletics Hall of Fame. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University in 1971 and 1974, and followed with a postdoctoral fellowship in medical ethics at Albany Medical College in 1977. Flores also taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1973 to 1982.
Flores is survived by his children, Paul Saye of Hollywood, CA and Stephanie Scales of Oklahoma City, OK, mother of his six grandchildren. Katie Strickland of Saint Petersburg, FL is his lone surviving sibling. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 11th at 1:00 PM, in the Kinesiology and Health Science Building (KHS199) at CSUF. Donations in memoriam may be made to the CSUF Department of Philosophy (Fund #38001).
