HALLAM passed away on October 10, 2012. She was born in 1932 in Buckhannon, West Virginia, the home of West Virginia Wesleyan College. Her father, Professor
William Hallam, was a long time member of the Wesleyan mathematics faculty. Hallie grew up as part of the Wesleyan College Community and in due time graduated with two major academic interests-studio art and American history. As she moved to Florida State for graduate work, her major field became art history alone. Her Master's thesis had particular interest and timeliness because it was written while the centennial of the American Civil War was current and the wartime art, largely the excellent battlefield illustration from Harper's Weekly, was open to new considerations. Meanwhile, Hallie's graduate level coursework took place at Florida State, and later the University of Pittsburgh. Her career at Rollins College began in 1966 and continued midway into the first decade of the new century. An articulate and self-assured teacher, she had great respect for her field, with a particularly strong conviction that the classroom is the teacher's domain. As a person, she had a kind and gentle personality and inspired that kind of behavior in those around her. It is significant that she had creative talent of her own. A mid-career quilt exhibition at the college museum was much admired and praised. Hallie is survived by Thomas, her husband of 32 years; his daughters, Katherine and Isabelle, from an earlier marriage; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. All agree that Hallie's presence in the family for much of all their lives is a treasure they are privileged to share. Her urn will be interred in the Peterson burial plot in Indian Mound cemetery in Romney, West Virginia. A small graveside service will be held by the minister of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
