Jack Beattie Obituary

Beattie, Jack of Winter Park passed away peacefully Sunday April 3, 2016. He was born October 2, 1934 in Bay City, Michigan and raised there. He earned his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University, his dental degree at University of Michigan and his Masters Degree in Orthodontics from Western Reserve in Cleveland. On June 27, 1959 he married Ernestine Johnson and they remained married until his death. In 1963, the family moved to Orlando. In 1965 they bought a home in Winter Park-and they have resided in that same home ever since. Dr. Jack Beattie was well known for the passion that he brought to his many activities over all his years. His passion for his career in orthodontics was marked by a legacy of service to his profession. Among his many elected and appointed positions, he served for many years as a Delegate to the American Dental Association and as a Delegate and Council Chairman for the American Association of Orthodontists. He received accolades and service awards from those organizations as well as from the Florida Association of Orthodontists and the Southern Association of Orthodontists. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Milo Hellman Award from the American Association of Orthodontists for original scientific research in orthodontics. He was passionate about politics having served in the 1970s as Chairman of the Orange County Republican Executive Committee and as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1968 and 1972. He is widely recognized for the passion that he brought to the pool as a competitive swimmer. He was a Michigan High School State Champion and All-American Swimmer at Bay City Central High School and a Collegiate All-American Swimmer at Michigan State. Swimming as an adult in "Masters Swimming" he set five world records, eleven national records, won eighty-eight National Championship races, had 257 Top Ten Nationally Ranked swims and seventeen #1 ranked swims. At sixty-six years of age, he was part of a record setting relay swim across the English Channel. In 2012 he received the Jack Breslin Lifetime Achievement Award from Michigan State University. He was appreciated by his friends and his family for his intellect and his insights and particularly for his wit and his sense of humor. He seemed to remember almost every joke ever told and more than that, he knew just how to tell each joke "right." In any crowd, he would be found telling stories, telling jokes or with another of his primary passions, singing songs. Many nights over the years, he could be found in a downtown Winter Park bar with a microphone in his hand joining an old friend for a song or two. Still today we enjoy his renditions of the classics on his CD, "Black Tie Optional". He is survived by Ernestine, his wife of 56 years, son Dr. John R. Beattie, Winter Park, who followed him into orthodontics and practiced with him for many years, son Dr. Jeffrey L. Beattie, Winter Park, an oral surgeon (spouse Tracy Beattie), and daughter Kimberly Beattie Nordheim, Boca Raton, an attorney (spouse Gregory Nordheim) and six grandchildren, Nick, Jake, Caroline, John, Gregory, and Jacqueline. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Dental Society of Greater Orlando Charitable Foundation.

There was just nobody like Jack! As one of my parents best friends (Ernie too!) I will always remember all the swim meets and that zip-up-the-back racing suit! Life of the party and big booming voice...always a smile and good word for everyone. I swam in your lane at Rollins today in your honor, Jack! What a blessing to have known you! Love and deepest sympathy for Ernie, and all the kids. There will never be another like Jack Beattie! He's having some laughs with Helynn and Harwell now, clinking the 'ol martini! Xox with love!

My deep condolences for your loss. We have lost a loving, fun, amazing man and was the life of every party. He was always there with a warm hug and hello. I have many memories of Jack and Ernestine. One of my favorites is meeting them for the first time at their annual Christmas Party 20 years ago. Picture this, it's close to Midnight, Jack, Kirk & Dave, my friend Glenda and I are all in the kitchen talking and Jack giggles and says, let's do a shot - of goldschlager. He reaches into the freezer, gets shot glasses out and pours out shots for all of us. We raise our glasses and make a toast to a wonderful holiday season.
I had never done a shot of Goldschlager, let alone, in someone's kitchen that I had just met. He made me feel so included! That's who Jack was - no matter who you were, when you were in his house, you were family. Jack, I will miss seeing that captivating smile around Winter Park.

Family of Jack Beattie

We were contemporaries, I started in 61 after Univ of Washington. Great memories of you and your personality and talent at the state meetings. You then went way above me in your contributions to all of ortho. Trying to remember if you had a son following in your footsteps. Sincerest condolences to your family.

The near daily emails and texts are already missed. I'm still reaching my phone to send a political commentary to you and have to remind myself. I'm grateful we were able to spend some time with you last Friday. I can't thank you enough for pushing me into the pool over 6 years ago. Thanks for all the meet ups along Park Avenue and most memorably the trip to Palm Beach. Most appreciated was your sincere wisdom that you passed along to help make life a little easier.

Captain, you will be greatly missed and enjoy swimming those laps in Heaven.

Jack,

My dear friend. Thank you for all the great memories and for letting me be part of your life. You always had the best stories and jokes that made me laugh. You gave me a great appreciation for history and made me learn more about politics. Thanks for all the good talks. I will always remember the fun times shopping for your parties and helping at the house, the last minute gatherings just because, the sunset cruises and knowing for sure that you will sing at least one song no matter where you were!
Keep singing Jack, now the angels can hear you.
You will be dearly missed and loved forever!

My heart and prayers go out to Ernestine and the entire Beattie family.

Jack...Tom and I share many fond memories of great times spent with you and Ernestine over the years. You and I shared a passion for music and we often sang together around a piano or on a stage. Among your most memorable and favorite songs was Sweet Caroline... so good, so good, so good! And of course, Me and My Bobby McGee... always waving your fingers as windshield wipers. The best advice you ever gave to me was always travel to new and different places whenever possible. To that end, we will embark on a new sailing adventure in the BVI's this month. We have planned a ceremonial swim in your honor. We will surely see a singing dolphin swimming nearby. Your generous spirit, love and friendship will remain in my heart forever. Thank you for being a very special part of my life. Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Beattie family.
