James Owens Obituary

James Broughton Owens, age 82, of Gainesville passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones and friends on Thursday, June 15, 2023.

James was born in Montgomery, Alabama and moved to his St. Cloud Florida home with his family in 1952. He attended St. Cloud High School ('57 graduate) where he played basketball, football and pitched for the baseball team. He graduated from the University of Florida. In 1965, he married Virginia Moffses, and in February they celebrated 58 years of marriage.

Jim was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Len G. Owens, his mother, Olga Sermon Clark, and his older sister, Patricia Bailey.

He was survived by his wife, Virginia Owens, sister Joyce Adams of St. Cloud (Larry Gaunt), Virginia's brother Phillip Moffses (Orlando) and 3 children: Jennifer Flakus (Chris), Jeff Owens (Greer), Julia Ariet (Wickie). He has 9 grandchildren: Matthew Flakus (Hannah), Madison Walker (Wyatt), Mackenzie Flakus, Mark Flakus, Mitchell Flakus, Molly Owens, Taylor Cornell (Conner), and Anna Ariet (George). He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends who loved him as well.

He enjoyed reading and playing poker as well as watching his grandchildren play sports.
