Joseph Charles Flynn Jr. obituary

Joseph Flynn Obituary

Dr. Joseph Charles Flynn, Jr., Orlando, passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2021. (If you're wondering, it wasn't COVID-19). Joe was a board certified orthopedic spinal surgeon at the Spine and Scoliosis Center. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 26, 1956, and grew up in Orlando where he attended Bishop Moore High School. After graduating in 1974 he attended Georgia Southern University and graduated with a BS in Biology in 1979. After college he pursued a career in teaching in rural Claxton, GA. It was a later change in heart that led him to change careers and attend the University of Florida Medical School, graduating in 1987. He did his orthopedic residency at the Medical University of South Carolina; followed by a spine fellowship at the Arkansas Spine Center in 1992. In 1993 he returned to Orlando to join his father and fellow surgeon, Dr. Joseph Charles Flynn Sr., at the Flynn Orthopedic Clinic. In 1996, his longtime business partner and friend Geoffrey Stewart joined the practice and rebranded as The Spine and Scoliosis Center, which still operates today. All of this background aside, he was a pretty awesome surgeon, and once used all of his orthopedic skills to operate on his daughter's cat.

Joe used his profession to volunteer for area youth sports. He was also active in supporting several local charities and helped start the Yellow Brick Road: The Holden Flynn Foundation which assists Central Florida families suffering from pediatric congenital heart disease.

While it's said in every obituary, Joe legitimately enjoyed life to the fullest. A dedicated family man, he was always the first to help anyone in trouble. He wasn't the greatest golfer, but he loved to be on the course. He wasn't the greatest sportsman, but he loved to be on the water. He took the turns kind of slow when he was driving, but he loved to race his cars. He was an avid Florida Gator fan and supported the athletics program as a Bull Gator for over 15 years. He was an excellent cook and most famously prepared the family's annual Christmas Roast Beast Dinner.

Joe was a friend of everyone, and everyone was his friend. If you knew him, you likely were blessed to spend a night with him sipping bourbon and listening to jazz on his porch overlooking the lake. He hosted an annual Fourth of July party where he invited everyone to witness him ignite a fireworks arsenal that rivaled the armory of many small nations. He tested his BBQ recipes so frequently you often smell the bouquet of hickory emanating from his clothes. Recently, his grandchildren were the light his life, and their Pap-Pap was always willing to pass along a good joke.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Jeanne; his high school sweetheart and best friend. Fate ultimately brought them together while he was attending Georgia Southern University. Together they raised four children, traveled the world, and spent numerous days sinking their toes into the sand together in Cocoa Beach.

He's also survived by his children Joseph "Trey" (Nicole); Tiffany Mullarney; Sarah Ergle (Silas); and Sean; his grandchildren Kaylee and Skylar Mullarney; Rylee Ergle; Holden (predeceased 2014) and Parker Flynn. His siblings Kathy Carnevale (Charlie); Patricia Durfee (Timothy); Marigrace Anderson (Christopher); and his Yazel, John (Theresa). He also loved his gaggle of nieces and nephews, "adopted" children (Jennifer Moorehead) and couch crashers that he treated like his own children and grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph C. and Jane Flynn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his grandson's pediatric heart charity, Yellow Brick Road: The Holden Flynn Foundation at, https://www.YBRF.org

I was deeply saddened to read this after updating my contacts of previous doctors. Dr. Flynn performed my back surgery in 2016. He went to bat against the insurance company for me. I really enjoyed his humor, and his "bedside" manner was awesome. RIP Dr. Flynn

I had not talked to Joe in a while and was shocked when I found this.
I grew up with Joe. In Boy Scouts he was the one that always started the fun. A true leader. Later, we carpooled to college while living at home. Taking turns driving. Everyone knew Joe growing up. He worked on my back too. I would send many friends to Dr Flynn as he was the best and always made room to see them. Rest in peace Joe.

I didn't find out until recently that Doc had passed away. After hanging out with him and a few others while he was at Med School in Gainesville, I really got to appreciate his "eclectic" knowledge and humor. He could change subjects in a micro-second and verbally spar with the anyone! That said, I reconnected with Joe at Einstein's one day, as well as had several spinal procedures under his skilled hands. All-in-all, he was a great guy who I trusted greatly! He will be missed! Blessings, David

Both Dr. Flynn Sr and Dr. Flynn JR were my back doctors. I wouldn´t go to anyone else for my back. Dr Flynn JR was the kindest person too asking me about my family. I am saddened by this news I just found out today. He will be missed. Sending love and condolences to the family and to the Spine and Scoliosis Surgery.

Just read in the Ga Southern magazine that our friend known as "Little Joe" passed away. My deepest condolences to the family. Joe was an original member of the Ga. Southern Rugby Club and his position on the team was hooker. He was held up by two props known as a front row in the scrum. All of this is rugby terminology. We all lost contact with Joe over the years and he can be proud to know the club is still playing/active at Southern. May you RIP Joe!

I was sad to hear this. I am 58 yrs old and was a patient of Dr. Flynn Sr. He did my spinal fusion when I was 14. He was a nice man, and I am sure Dr. Flynn Jr. was as well. I did not know him, but wanted the family to know my deepest sympathies to you. Tracey Gaster Keith

Dr Flynn operated on both my Dad & I. He ranks right up there with my fav doctors EVER. He could "dummy proof" medical jargon for us, and made us laugh a lot. As I lay on the operating table, he told me that he might need to get a few phone books to stand on (I am 6´4"; he was considerably shorter)! I was stunned to hear the news. We think our doctors are indestructible. I will miss him a lot.

My deepest sympathies. Dr. Flynn preformed surgery on my neck allowing me to continue my military career. He also performed surgery on my Mother´s neck. Our quality of life is directly related to his knowledge and skill. He was kind also. Rarely do you get an excellent Dr that is also kind . God Bless.

I knew Joe for many years as I provided anesthesia for his patients. I always enjoyed working with him as he was an excellent surgeon and always a gentleman. He really cared about his patients and would do anything for them. We were good friends from way back and extremely sad of his passing. We always talked about bass fishing, but never had a Chance to go on a trip. I miss him!

What a fine doctor and gentleman. I met him about 30 years ago and saw him infrequently, the last time was several months ago when I was visiting a friend in hospital. So many have been privileged to be under his wonderful care. And our granddaughter will be attending Georgia Southern this August.

I am so sad to hear of Dr Flynn´s passing this week. He was a wonderful doctor. He performed my 2nd spinal fusion surgery in 2013. This was an extremely difficult procedure that no one would do but he didn´t think twice. He knew I needed it and was only concerned about my recovery and that I had enough help after since my kids were 1 and 6. I remember finding out that I also needed 2 hip replacements during my 2nd opinion appt for the spinal fusion. I went back to him and he just lowered his head and said " I didn´t want to tell you and overwhelm you." He genuinely cared for the well being of his patients. He was an extremely caring and talented man whom I will always remember and be thankful to have known.

Such a sad day learning of the passing of Dr. Flynn. He was my surgeon in 2016 when I needed surgery for a pinched nerve. I knew from the first day meeting him in his office that my confidence level was as high as it could get. Maybe it was that Philly connection! LOL! I couldn't recommend Dr. Flynn enough when friends would tell me about their sciatic or spine issues. My deepest condolences to Dr. Flynn's family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

I was a classmate of Joe´s and Jeanne´s at Bishop Moore, and was blessed to see them in 2019 at our 45th reunion. Our class was very special and we always admired their relationship, beautiful family and their commitment to the community. He will be sorely missed, and we will all lift Jeanne and her family up in love and prayers.
