Kevin Dunk Obituary

DUNK, KEVIN B., I (aged 50, born August 7, 1957) returned to my beloved mother ocean on July 29th. to continue my journey for enlightenment after battling cancer (actually, my doctors did the battling, I was just the battleground, Cancer 1 - Kev 0). I am survived by my best friend and wife of 30 years Cindy Centell-Dunk; my two children, Adric and Kara (all of Maitland FL). I am further survived by sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, life long friend Gerard "Jed" Haas, and special friends in Florida, Wisconsin, and everyone on the "monthly update list" I was preceded in death by my mother Jo Anne (Dunk) Larson. I was raised and
attended high school and university in Racine, WI. I was a proud graduate of the Univer-sity of WI-Parkside 1980. I devoted my life to working to help others. I found this present life's purpose in providing housing for low to moderate income families. I was the deputy director of the Housing Authority of Racine County from 1989 until 2004. I spent the last years of my life as the Executive Director of the Seminole County Housing Authority in my adopted home of Florida. I enjoyed my semi retirement (living in FL you never really work fulltime) by working in my gardens, growing bananas, pineapples, oranges, lemons and grapefruits, and many varieties of palm trees (though I could never get a coconut palm to grow) and tanning. My family and I wish to extend our thanks to Dr. Grow, Dr.
Diamond, Sharon, and the entire staff of Florida Hospital Cancer Institute for their care and compassion. Per my request no services were held. Memoriam to my daughter's college fund (she picked an expensive one) would be appreciated, in care of Cindy Centell-Dunk 1433 Winston Rd, Maitland, FL 32751.

Cindy, Adrick, and Kara -
We are deeply saddened for your loss and hope you know that we are here for you all. This may be a bit selfish but, we've grown acustom to always having Kevin around too. Whether seeing him working in the yard, a smoke in the driveway, or just available for a chat and drink, he will be greatly missed by the both of us.
Jake too misses his bud...he frequently asked about his buddy Boo-Boo...now he explains to us that he is in heaven.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the belovèd's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

Kevin faced his illness with extraordinary courage and humour. I was lucky enough to read his monthly updates which never failed to make me laugh.
When we met it was always over a drink or two and he was a great guy. My last memory was of enjoying a day at St Pete beach with the arts festival,a few drinks and a lot of laughs.
I never really thought of Kevin as 'sick' when I saw him and I'm sure he never wanted to be thought of that way. I was looking at some photos from that day - Kevin smiling in the sun, Cindy and Kevin, Angela and I around a table near the beach enjoying cocktails. That's what I'll remember. My thoughts are with Cindy, Kara & Adric.

First time I've written on anything like this.... so a little odd. But, Cindy as I said earlier I just have a vision of Kevin in the pith helmet he bought when we met up with you on St Pete on our last visit, a fun day and I'm so glad we got to spent the time with you all then.
Of course another outstanding picture I have in my head is of us at El Gordo's (many moons ago) being the only people mad enough to be up on the dance floor (alcohol in hand of course). I'm so sad we won't get to see you on our next trip over to FL, but tonight I will raise a glass of wine in your honour, my dear friend.
with much love

p.s. Kevin - if you're seeing this (we do still live in Scotland) but the website won't let me input it. so for poetic licence we are now St Pete Residents!!

As a friend honored by being on the monthly update list, I will miss Kevin's never ending humor. From the story of first being diagnosed with cancer, and the walls caving in with millions of spiders running across the floor, to "Judith the Destroyer" fitting him for his radiation mask; I laughed and cried with each entry. The final update on July 29 took my breath away. May he return to the ocean he loved. Rest in Peace Kev. Love and Peace to Cindy, Adric, and Kara.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Kevin twice, but feel as though I knew him personally because of my daughter Shannon. I know how much he truly impacted her life and will continue to do so for years to come. He was one of those people that pass through your life but yet will always
remain. Kevin, how proud your family must be to know what a special person you were and how you're memory will live on, in all the peoples lives that you touched. My prayers are with kevin's family as they go thru the days ahead.

I can not begin to express the impact that Kevin has made on my life. I had the good fortune to meet Kevin at the OHA and made the transition with him when he went on to run the SCHA. What a team we made! I can say with absolute certainty that I learned from the best in the business, and I am a better person for having known him. So Kevin, Thank you for your gift to me...I hope I make you proud.

Kevin was a terrific housing professional and an outstanding friend. I have yet to meet another person who had the passion he had for his work. He possessed a rare ability to excel in everything he did. It could be writing a grant, building a house for a tenant to purchase, or throwing a party for friends! What a great guy. Thanks to his loving family for sharing him with all of us whose lives he touched in special ways. He will be missed. Peace and love,

Kevin became "family" when he moved to Florida to work at the Orlando Housing Authority. He was the consumate professional and was very knowledgeable. Kevin always volunteered to help our clients. In 2004 after 3 hurricanes devastated Orlando, he even cut down trees so public housing residents could get out of their apartments. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, the staff and clients of the Orlando Housing Authority, we offer our deepest condolences to his family; he always made known his adoration for/of them.

It was an extreme joy to meet Kevin Dunk. Often meeting Directors of Housing in my job with HUD is nowhere as pleasurable as he made my visit to Seminole County Housing Authority. I would like to be informed about the life celebration.
