Ronald Harbert Obituary

Harbert, Ronald , 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 28, 2017. Ron was born on December 20, 1931 in Battle Creek, MI to Ralph and Zulma Harbert. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Ron joined the Navy and served on the escort carrier USS Siboney between World War II and the Korean War. After serving in the Navy, Ron returned to the University of Michigan Law School where he obtained his law degree. At the same time, he began courting, and eventually wed, his childhood sweetheart, Lois Sandberg. Following their wedding, the two immediately relocated to Florida where they lived in one of the "Butt" cottages on the shores of Lake Jessamine. Ron began his legal career practicing with the Arnold Matheny firm for several years before going into practice with Bill Mateer and eventually forming the Mateer Harbert firm in the late 1960's. Throughout a long legal career that spanned over 50 years, Ron specialized in healthcare and transactional work and was one of the earliest attorneys in Florida to be board certified in "Healthcare Law" by the Florida Bar. He was a man of impeccable ethics and professionalism and he instilled those values in all who worked at the firm. In addition to his legal practice, Ron was very active in Junior Achievement of Central Florida serving on its Board and in other leadership capacities for several years. He also served as a Trustee of the Orange County Public Library from 1994-2002 and as President from 1998-2000. Ron and Lois also enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their Ormond Beach condo. Ron was predeceased by Lois, his wife of 54 years, in 2014; and their son, David in 1961. He is survived by their children, Sarah (Bob) and Tom (Tina); and grandchildren, David (Rachael), Amy, Bradley and Allie. Ron is also survived by his sister, Suzanne Boice; sister-in-law Donna Hoffhines; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 2499 N. Westmoreland Drive, Orlando, FL 32804. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron's name to the Orlando Health Foundation, 3160 Southgate Commerce Blvd., Suite 50, Orlando, FL 32806.
