Ryan Burgess Obituary

On December 21st, 2006, Ryan received his final order. He will now guard the gates of heaven while watching down over all of us during our times of need.

Ryan John Burgess was born April 26th, 1985 in Midland. He was the son of Jon D. and Kim Burgess. He lived his childhood in Sanford and attended Meridian Public Schools, graduating in 2003. After graduation, Ryan attended one year of college before deciding he needed to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. He planned on finishing his college degree upon his completion in the Marine Corps and was already making plans to re-enroll.

Ryan believed everyone should be grateful for our freedom and brave enough to earn that freedom. He was serving his second tour in Iraq when he was killed by an Improvised Explosion Device. While in the Marine Corps, Ryan was a vehicle commander and squad leader, taking great pride in the responsibility the Marine Corps bestowed upon him. His marksmanship skills during boot camp earned him the Expert Rifle Marksmanship Badge. These skills were called upon during his tours in Iraq, as he often served as a sniper.

Ryan is survived by his parents, Jon D. and Kim Burgess, his sister Lindsey (Jeff) Burgess-Stopka, and a brother, Ryan "Motch" (Elizabeth) Maciejewski. He is also survived by his girlfriend Emily Wright. They had made plans to spend the rest of their lives together once he left the Marine Corps. He is survived by his grandmothers Jessie Burgess and Delores Spitler, and his grandfather Robert Spitler, Sr., an Army veteran. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles; Robert "Bob" and Diane Spitler and their children (Shawna, Heather and Jordan Spitler), Jim and Pam Burgess and their children (Jodi (Chris) German and Eric Burgess), Dan and Becky Fetters, Tim Burgess, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather John "Jack" Arthur Burgess, a decorated WWII veteran himself, and an uncle Robert "Bobby" Burgess who passed away as a young child.

Ryan will be deeply missed by everyone. He touched all of us in so many ways. He loved life, his family, his girlfriend and adventure. Some of those adventures included rock climbing, kayaking, riding his quad, camping, traveling and spending time with his friends. Ryan will always be our hero.

Funeral services will take place Tuesday at the Midland Evangelical Free Church, 7221 Jefferson Ave. Chaplain Roger Stauffer and Pastor Gib Giblin will officiate with full military honors to be presented by the United States Marine Corps. Please note: corrected funeral time is 11 a.m.

Ryan's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., Monday 1 to 6 p.m., and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be offered to the family in memory of Ryan. These funds will be used to aid injured Marines. If you are unable to visit with the family in person you may send your condolences through www.waresmithwoolever.com.

I was travelling through the interstate today July 4th and couldn't help feel deeply affected by the way you honor the memory of your son with precious words written on your campervan. I need to express my sincere gratitude and reassurance that your son's sacrifice will never be forgotten. Ryan John is a true hero.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Burgess Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

My husband and I own and operate a small bar and grill in Richmond, KY. My husband is a former Marine and yesterday we hosted a Veterans Day event to raise money for KY Wounded Warriors. On her way to the event my best friend got behind a vehicle from Michigan that had a special message about a lost son and hero printed on it. She arrived at our event told us about Ryan Burgess who was killed in action on 12-21-06. She said the message had brought her to tears, and he was in our thoughts all day. Whenever there was a toast throughout the day it was made in honor of Ryan Burgess. It was as if it was meant for my friend to get behind that car and bring the message of this fallen hero to our gathering where he could be honored. We never met him. We didn't know his story but yesterday he was with us in spirit. We salute you Ryan Burgess. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ryan, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hey Ry,
Just stopping by to see your face. I have been thinking a lot about you lately. I moved to North Carolina, and everytime I leave my family I cry, and cry. My Mom always whispers in my ear, "Think about Ryan, Lindsey, Kim, and John. Ryan is always with you." It makes me so sad, but I know it is true. You are in my thoughts and prayers everyday! People down here are hearing about you, I think hero braclets are new in the south. People always stop me and ask about my braclet, so I pass on your story. I know that it touches strangers, just as much as it touches all of us. I know that you will always live on in my heart, and other people's hearts as long as we pass on your story. It's the least I can do for you... I should be home in a couple of weeks, I will try my hardest to stop by and see you.

All of my love,

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

Dear Family of Ryan Burgess. I make it a point to read about every hero killed when they appear in the Washington Post. I have however, never signed a guest book. When I saw that great smile on your sons face, I was compelled to write and tell you how sorry I am for your tremendous loss. I think Ryan's face will forever be in my mind as a representative of all the wonderful men and women who have died in this war. I have two sons and can't imagine the sorrow and grief you must be feeling for losing your beautiful boy. God bless you and may Ryan be forever at peace and may everyday bring you more and more wonderful memories, which help ease your pain. Please accept my heartfelt sorrow.

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

My wife knew that being alone on new years was the least she could give to support me in my escorting Ryan home to his family. As much as I would have loved to be with my family over the holidays it was only a small sacrifice to pay to help a MARINE come home. I believe that there is something awesome about men who will stick closer than a brother and never give up whatever the cost. According to his friends and family Ryan was such a man. The Burgess Family, you all are incredible people, you touch my heart and will always be on my mind.

Though I didn't know him personally, I did graduate from Meridian in 1995 and the Burgess name was well known. His bravery and commitment to serve our country and protect our rights will never be forgotten. May his family be looked over by the lord and may he always rest in peace. Thank you Ryan for your duty served.

For the Burgess family, my husb and &I lived in Midland for a l0ng time before moving to southeastern Michigan. We all are so fortunate to have young women & men to keep us safe as Ryan did.
We appreciate each and every one of them. Tis not an easy job, they are doing. Sending our love, condolences and just a big thank you to Ryan, his family and all those serving. We have a grandson that served two deployments 16 months in the persian gulf, on the U.S.S Nimitz.
GodSpeed Ryan, & carry on !

God bless the Ryan Burgess family, I was one of the Northwest Airlines Pilots that brought Ryan home on his final flight to be with his family. I stood on the cold tarmac with great sorrow and also great pride in the young Marine for the sacrifice given to this country to protect our way of life. Thank you Ryan and your family for your your service.

Ryan and I went to elementary and junior high together. We saw each other here and there over the years of high school and after, but I will always remember how he could always make me laugh when I was down.
