Charles Lester Obituary

Charles "Charlie" Arthur Lester was born on October 30, 1934, in his mother's family home in Warren, Arkansas. He was the younger of two children born to Warren Eugene Lester and Janet Wiltshire Lester.

Charlie spent his early childhood in Arkansas, where his father worked for an oil company. As a teenager, he moved with his family to Alhambra, California, near Los Angeles, where his parents owned and operated a neighborhood gas service station. He graduated from Alhambra High School in 1952, where he participated in track and played football. During these years, Charlie shared a passion for cars with his brother Gene; together they belonged to a car club and raced modified hot rods at venues including the El Mirage dry lakebed.

Following high school, Charlie was drafted into the United States Army during the Cold War. He was assigned to a maintenance group at a ballistic missile test range, where rotating missile crews trained and completed certification. Charlie later recalled the conditions at the remote test site as primitive and challenging, but the experience left a lasting impression on his life.

After his military service, Charlie pursued higher education and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1970. During his college years, he married Barbara, beginning a partnership that would remain an important part of his life. He went on to devote many years to teaching, shaping the lives of countless students with patience and quiet dedication. In addition to his work in education, Charlie was a skilled automobile upholsterer, a trade that reflected his lifelong interest in cars and craftsmanship.

In the 1980s, Charlie settled in Watsonville, California, on his family's farm, where he lovingly helped care for his mother. He found comfort in the rhythms of rural life and remained closely connected to family and community.
Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Warren "Gene" E. Lester Jr., and his parents, Warren E. Lester Sr. and Janet Wiltshire Lester.

Charlie will be remembered for his steady work ethic, his mechanical skill, and his enduring love of automobiles. He carried with him stories of a life that spanned small-town beginnings, mid-century California car culture, military service, and a career in education. His quiet strength and practical wisdom left a lasting mark on those who knew him.

He is survived by his friends and all whose lives he touched.

A memorial gathering for Charlie will be held on April 26, 2026.
