Charlotte Cawley Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

CHARLOTTE JANE (SUTTON) CAWLEY Charlotte Jane (Sutton) Cawley, 82, of Lost Tree Village, North Palm Beach, died peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family, on April 18, 2004. Loved by all who knew her, "Jane" was born on August 6, 1921 in Endicott, New York. She was the elder of the two children of Richard and Grace (Smith) Sutton. As a young adult, she excelled in the musical arts, and her love of music sustained her throughout her life. Together with her brother Dick, she grew up working in customer relations at Sutton Drugs, the family business in Endwell, NY, where their father was pharmacist. Jane was noted for her gentle kindness and thoughtful, loving way with people. She treated everyone she met with great respect and dignity. Her quiet strength reflected her deep spiritual nature, and faith and family were the center of her life. Jane was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School and of Ridley-Lowell Business & Technical Institute, Binghamton, New York. Prior to her marriage, she worked also as an executive secretary in the Research & Development division of International Business Machines (IBM) in Endicott. On May 3, 1944, Jane married U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Wayne W. Cawley at St. Ambrose Church in Endicott. She was the love of his life, and he, of hers. Together, they nurtured their family of six children, both in Upstate New York and in South Florida. And for more than 20 years, they made their summer home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Following 57 devoted years of marriage, Wayne died in 2002 at the age of 84. A cherished son, Michael R. Cawley, died in 1990 at age 43. Jane is survived by her son, Jeffrey W. Cawley of Raleigh, NC; four daughters and two sons-in-law: Lucinda L. Cawley of Syracuse, NY, Janice M. Price of Port St. Lucie, FL, Grace A. and W. Alan Rhine of Winter Springs, FL, and Virginia J. and Robert M. Berland of Brandon, FL; a daughter-in-law, Christine L. Cawley of Endwell, NY; eight grandchildren: Karin Ann Price, Justin, Joshua and Jenna Rhine, and Andrew, David, Sarah and Brian Berland, all of Florida; a brother, Richard J. Sutton of Vestal, NY; two sisters-in-law: Jane F. Sutton of Vestal, and Antonette R Cawley of Lady Lake, FL; two brothers-in-law: Lee Cawley of Lady Lake; and Lynn Cawley of West Endicott, NY; her ‘sister-cousin,' Elizabeth Huber of Endicott; nine additional cousins; and 15 nieces and nephews. Special friends include Mildred N. Legg of Choconut, PA, Frank White, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, and Donna J. Moutier of Syracuse, NY. Jane is survived also by her beloved 'angels" Pamela A. Sjosten, geriatric care manager; Beulene Jenkins, C.N.A.; and Fannie L. Napier, S.O.E. The Cawley family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to them, to Reverend William D. O'Shea, and to members of the Orange Team at Hospice of Palm Beach County for their loyalty and tender, loving care of Jane during her extended illnesses. The Cawley family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 21, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Howard Funeral Home, 754 U.S. Highway One, North Palm Beach where a Scripture Service will follow at 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 22 in St. Paul of the Cross Church, 10970 State Road A1A (Singer Island), North Palm Beach. Entombment will follow immediately at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, Royal Palm Beach. To celebrate the joy of Jane's life, her family requests that anyone who wishes to, wear bright, life-affirming colors. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Jane's memory to: Hospice of Palm Beach County, Inc., 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407; or to a local chapter of either the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimers Association.

To my dear Cousins,

I want to extend, again, all of my deepest sympathy to you and your families. Aunt Jane was the glorious and beloved matriarch of a close and wonderful extended family. I have so many fond memories of Aunt Jane from my childhood and, more recently, from her visit in London and celebrating November birthdays a few years back. During this difficult time I will keep these lovely memories and thoughts of all of you close to my heart.

With much love, from Cathy Lee.
