D. Davies Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

D. LARRY DAVIES D. Larry Davies, 68, of Atlantis, FL, passed away on November 29, 2010, after a battle with kidney cancer. Born into humble beginnings, Larry was raised in Ketchikan, AK during his formative years and moved with his family to Philadelphia, PA at the age of 15. Upon graduation from high school, he was awarded a basketball scholarship to a West Coast college and ultimately graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a degree in Business Administration. His venture into the business world began when he look a job with Allstate Insurance Company in Philadelphia as a trainee. Larry's competitive spirit and ability to focus on the big picture led to management and executive positions with Allstate transferring from Philadelphia to New Jersey, Milwaukee, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New Jersey, Chicago, and back to Detroit, culminating in his appointment to President, Chief Operating Officer, and the Board of Directors of Allstate Insurance Companies of Canada in Toronto. Larry later retired as a senior officer at Allstate's corporate headquarters in Northbrook, IL. An avid sports fan, Larry was able to root for any number of teams having lived in so many cities and as result, he had the winning team nearly every week. He loved golf and according to him, reached the pinnacle of the golf world with an "unofficial, unattested" hole-in-one at Atlantis Golf Club several years ago. Larry's terrific sense of humor was always one of his most endearing qualities along with his no nonsense approach to life. Those who knew him well were often on the receiving end of his well intentioned general advice on just about any topic! He was a pragmatist, and a very thoughtful and caring person who will be missed so very much. Larry wished to express his deep gratitude to his extended family in the Pacific Northwest for their support and love throughout his life. He was also so very grateful for the wonderful relationship with his daughters who have been such a comfort to him during his illness. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; loving daughters, Laurie Davies (Chris) of Round Lake Beach, IL and Stephanie Davies of Chicago, IL; sister, Barbara Bell (Bruce) of Forest, VA; brother, Stephen Davies (Jane) of Coconut Creek, FL; his former wife and mother of his daughters, Lillian Davies of Chicago, IL; special friends Michael and Connie Thomas of Boca Raton, FL and a host of family and dear friends. At Larry's request, a family gathering to celebrate his life will be private. For those who wish, memorial donations in his name may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. All County Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements. To express condolences and/or make donations Visit PalmBeachPost.com/obituaries

I just recieved the news of Larry's passing. I cried, I cried for Nancy, who I hold near to my heart like family. As sad as this news is, we can all celebrate a "life well lived" Larry was blessed in life, for his happy spirit, his intelligence, and off the charts wit! There is content in knowing Nancy was a part of his full life, and likewise for Larry too that he shared his life with a special person like Nancy. I am certain Larry's spirit sits along side of God now who is laughing at his funny jokes and humor! God bless him, Nancy and his family.

Larry Davies was one of the first real executives that I knew. As a college friend of Laurie's - I remember being motivated by the stories of her Dad's success at Allstate and resulting moves. Even though I only met Larry once, his career was one that inspired mine.
Laurie is a long time friend and I remember when Steph was the "baby sister". They have both grown into remarkable women - both with their Dad's drive, determination, and humor.
Nancy, Laure, and Steph - my deepest condolences for your loss. Warmest Regards, Kim

Nancy: I was a high school classmate of Larry's. Greg and Tom have kept a group of us informed of his situation. If he was as great an adult as he was a teenage kid, you must have had a great life together. I was just e-mailing Greg and Tom my recollections when I decided to Google Larry and see if there was a memorial opportunity like this one. I told them that my most vivid memory of Larry was his soft one-hander from the corner. Swish. We went undefeated his senior year. A teriffic guy. He'll be missed.

Dear Nancy, Stephanie and Laurie,
I have so many fond memories of Larry - albeit up to the age of 19!! I sure would have enjoyed a later in life reunion as he was a wonderful person and lots of fun to be with. My prayers are with you all. Susan Mann O'Connell, Springfield High School 1962
