Dorothea Daniels Glass, a noted and highly respected specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine, passed away on Saturday, April 20th, at the age of 92. Dr. Glass was born in New York City and graduated from Cornell University just before the beginning of World War II. When she sought entrance to medical school after the war, she was repeatedly turned down because she was married and had children. She attended Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, from which she graduated in 1954 (having given birth to her third child during her second year exams). She graduated magna cum laude and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. After interning at Albert Einstein Medical Center, and completing a fellowship in Preventive Medicine, Dr. Glass completed a residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia, and did postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania. She was Chief of PM&R at the Coatesville (PA) Veterans Administration Hospital and at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital. She also served on the clinical staffs of the hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson Medical College and Women's Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Glass was affiliated with Moss Rehabilitation Hospital for 15 years, for 10 of which she was Medical Director. She was Professor Emerita of Rehabilitation Medicine at Temple University Medical School, and for 5 years was Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Temple and at Albert Einstein Medical Center. She was also associated with programs at Cooper Medical Center (NJ), Frankford Hospital (Phila), and the Philadelphia Geriatric Center. After relocating to Florida, she became the Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Miami Veterans Association Hospital, and a clinical professor of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Medical School; she also served on the clinical staff of Jackson Memorial Hospital. From the beginning of her career as a physiatrist, Dorothea Daniels Glass had a strong commitment to teaching medical students and the public about Rehabilitation Medicine. She was the Director of Residency Training at Temple Medical School, served as an examiner of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and was extensively involved in creating a PM&R residency program at the University of Miami Medical School. She also served for a number of years as a Surveyor for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. She has authored or co-authored many articles, chapters and presented-papers. She is a Past President of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the first female physician so elected, as well as having been President of the Florida Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She received the highest award of each of those organizations. Since 1995, Dr. Glass volunteered her medical services for Volunteers in Medicine in Martin County, Florida, an organization serving low-income residents with no medical coverage. As the President of Friends of VIM, she was instrumental in helping the organization establish financial stability. In addition to volunteering medical services and actively engaging in raising funds for VIM, she spread the message of the good work and great need of VIM throughout Florida. She was the recipient of numerous professional and civic awards, including the Governor's Commission on the Employment of the Handicapped (PA), the Humanitarian Award of the Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society, the John Eiselie Davis award of the American Kinesiotherapy Assn., the Carl Haven Young Service Award, Florida Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Gold Key Award AAPM&R, Distinguished Service Award of Moss Rehabilitation Hospital, the Susan B. Anthony Award of the League of Women Voters of Martin County. She served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of the Treasure Cost and South Florida and was also a charter member of the Stuart Corinthian Yacht Club. Dr. Glass was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert Glass. She is survived by her children Anne Roth, Deborah Glass, Catherine (Leo) Barrett, and Eugene (Susan) Glass, grandchildren David Roth, Allyssa Sweeney, and Melissa Barrett, great grandchildren Dylan and Aiden, and a sister, Joy Daniels Singer. Contributions in Dr. Glass' memory may be made to: The Friends of Volunteers In Medicine Clinic, 417 SE Balboa Avenue, Stuart, FL 34994, or to the Dorothea Glass MD and Anna Kleegman Daniels MD Scholarship, Temple University, College of Liberal Arts of Temple University, c/o Frances Hollingsworth, Asst.
