Family-Placed ObituaryDr. HENRY BRANDT Dr. Henry Brandt, Pioneer in Modern-Day Biblical Counseling, Dies. Singer Island, FloridaÑDr. Henry Brandt, acknowledged by many as the "Father of Modern-Day Biblical Counseling," died at home Monday, November 25, 2008, from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. He was 92. For over five decades, Dr. Brandt Ñ international consultant, educator, counselor, author, and conference speakerÑimpacted the lives of countless people. As a skilled communicator, he authored numerous books, including the classic, The Heart of the Problem, as well as his soon-to-be-released Soul Prescription, which he co-authored with the late Dr. Bill Bright. His use of Scripture, combined with his unique sense of humor, reached many to help facilitate genuine change. With a focus on individual development, as well as marriage and family living, the legacy of his ministry has been written in the hearts and lives of generations of men, women, and children around the world. Henry's insightful work, which has been translated into numerous languages, continues to circulate the globe with increasing influence through the Henry Brandt Foundation, which was established in 2006 to make Henry's teachings available online in audio and print form at
www.HenryBrandtFoundation.org. Born in Canada in 1916 as the youngest of ten children, Henry grew up in Michigan. He received his B.A. from Houghton College, his M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University, and his PhD in Marriage and Family Relations from Cornell University. During Dr. Brandt's career as a psychologist, he worked with Lamaze, hosted a decade of popular family radio programs for Moody Bible Institute, contributed to a number of ministriesÑCampus Crusade for Christ, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, CrossWorld (UFM), Navigators, Churches Alive, Prison Fellowship, Greater European Missions, among many othersÑtaught at Houghton College, General Motors Institute, North American Baptist Seminary, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and founded departments of psychology for Christian Heritage College and Palm Beach Atlantic University. In 2003, the American Association of Christian Counselors presented Henry with the "Care Giver Award" for his lifetime achievements in counseling. Henry was married to Eva (d. 1982), with whom he had three children: Richard (Valerie) of Chicago, IL; Beth of Richmond, KY; Suzanne (James) of Cleveland, OH, a daughter-in-law Patty, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He later married Marcy, who had one daughter, Lori, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Following Marcy's death, Henry married Jo Anderson, who had three childrenÑWill (d. 2000) (Ann) of Lodi, CA; Juliette of Moscow, ID; and Chris of New York, NYÑand four grandchildren. Jo and Henry were married twenty-two years. Jo, who faithfully attended Henry throughout his illness, was with him when he died.
