As an absolute rookie 1st year rep at DG Herb asked me to come to Westboro. I sat across the desk and he asked me "how come you speak Japanese?" when I answered that I'd done mormon mission there he said "the best god damned salesman in this company was a mormon, you guys can really sell."...and boom, a career a was born. Herb gave me the break I needed and I will be forever grateful. My deepest sympathy and may God bless.

As a Branch Manager in the Philadelphia area in the 80s, I was often tasked with taking Herb on a customer visit when he wanted to visit Philly:-). Quite a character.

I spoke to him a little over a month ago he sent me a message on Facebook asking me to call him. He knew I'd become a fishing nut after DG and I mentioned I'd seen the photo of him on his FB page with a large striped bass. He said just loved chasing stripers in the big freshwater lakes of the South. And he was really proud of his catch in that photo, That fish is at the top on the food chain, he said. Nothing else can touch it. We talked a little about the old days, and about health stuff and getting old and losing old friends like Campbell and Bateman. But mostly he wanted to talk about fishing. He sounded good and happy. I'm glad we connected. Rest in peace old friend.

Wow. So sorry to hear this. He is the reason I went back to college. Told me it was not an option to not have a college education. Wise words from a brilliant man. My thoughts are with his family.

I met Herb in the elevator at our condominium. He faced many medical challenges and we always talked about our back pains. I will miss his smiling face. Anita Ford
