Herbert Swope Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

HERBERT BAYARD SWOPE, JR. Producer, Director, Journalist and Broadcaster 1915 Ð 2008 Veteran film/television/stage producer and commentator Herbert Bayard Swope, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2008 in Palm Beach, Florida. An early day television network executive, Swope was a noted producer in television, motion pictures and the stage, as well as a host commentator with his own radio and television shows. Born November 30, 1915 in New York City, Swope grew up in the heady intellectual world of the famed Algonquin Round Table in New York, of which his author/journalist father was a founder. Swope, Sr. was considered an icon of his time, winning the first Pulitzer Prize in 1917 for reporting 'Inside the German Empire,' in which he coined the phrase 'Cold War', marking one of the four Pulitzers he won. Swope, Jr.'s early years were spent mingling with the intelligentsia of his father's world, including Albert Einstein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward, Philip Barry and Harpo Max, at the Algonquin and during croquet matches, a game made popular by Swope peer and the Algonquins, at the Swope Long Island Estate. Those memories are recorded in a biography, 'A Perfectly Normal Childhood,' he was completing at the time of his death. Swope, Jr. was educated at Horace Mann School, Choate School and Princeton University. He served in the United States Navy (1941-1946) before joining CBS Television as a remote unit director. He moved into the new field of sportscasting, directing many firsts in the field that won him the Variety Show Management Award and a citation by the American TV Society. Joining NBC as a producer/director in the early days of live television, he won the Sylvania TV Award for Outstanding Achievement in Directing Technique and became executive producer of NBC-TV in charge of 'Wide Wide World.' A forerunner in the Golden Era of the burgeoning television industry, he produced and directed such series and specials as 'Lights Out', 'The Clock', 'The Black Robe', 'Robert Montgomery Presents', 'Arsenic and Old Lace', 'Climax', 'Five Fingers', and the long running 'The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis', in which he discovered a young actor named Bob Denver. Later he became producer/host of 'This Was TV, Growth of a Giant' and his own radio and television commentary shows, 'Swope's Scope' and 'Critic's Views.' Moving into motion picture production as an executive producer at 20th Century-Fox and the Walter Reade Organization, Swope produced the films 'Hilda Crane', 'Three Brave Men', 'The True Story of Jesse James', 'The Bravados', and 'The Fiend who Walked the West.' His theatrical ventures were as Director/Co-Producer of 'Step on a Crack', 'Fragile Fox' and 'Fair Game for Lovers.' Mr. Swope, Jr. was predeceased by his actress wife, Margaret Hayes in 1977. He is survived by their children, Hebert Bayard Swope III of Manhattan, and Tracy Brooks Swope Avildsen of Beverly Hills, CA; two stepchildren, Elizabeth and Sam Warriner, by his second wife, the late Elizabeth Edgar Swope; three grandchildren, Hayes Swope, Rajah Vlijter and Bridget Avildsen; and one great-grandchild, Zazni Vlijter. Private Family Services will take place. A public memorial service will be held at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, Florida at later date to be announced. NORTHWOOD FUNERAL HOME, West Palm Beach is in charge of arrangements. The family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mr. Swope's memory to your local chapter of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Herbert, you and I worked together in 1987-1988 at WPBR Radio. You were the consummate professional and you exuded Palm Beach. I will never forget your live commercials for Palm Beach Motor Cars and Palm Beach Jai Alai. It was my first job in radio after college and It was an experience I will never forget. "Herbert Swope here..." Rest in Peace.

Sadly, I just learned of Herbert's passing only recently when I was reading about the upcoming demolition of the family's house in Sands Point, NY. He talked of the house often when I worked with him in the late 70's at WPBR Talk Radio. What a wonderful person, what an amazing life. It was my great pleasure to have worked at WPBR during that time with Herbert as well as Bea Wain & Andre Baruch and the wonderful station owners, Everett & Valerie Aspinwall. Many memories, but Herbert trying to explain the game of polo to my husband and me prior to a charity event we were all attending will always be one of my favorites.

My sincere condolences to the family.

For Herbert...with your death
Palm Beach became a little
grayer...a little dimmer.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I listened to Mr. Swope when he was with WSBR located near the Lake Worth Casino. He was such a delight to hear each weekday. I had the opportunity to meet him when the station took contest winners to the Hialeah race track. And I hope to read a guestbook entry from the former owners of WSBR in the 70's. Mr. Swope will be missed by everyone who knew him as is another former radio personality, the late Jack Cole who was with WJNO.

It was really a pleasure to work for Betty and Herbert Swope. They both were very special people and the two years that I took care of their Rose Garden was wonderful. I was so happy to be able to make their roses look so beautiful for them to enjoy. I really miss them both but the wonderful memories of them and their roses will live on with me forever. All my thoughts and prayers go out the Swope Family.

Just found out about Mr. Swope's passing. When I started at WSBR in 1991, I found him to be an overflowing fountain of knowledge and anecdotes. This young 25 year old kid was very much in awe of the man's expertise as both a talk show host, and as a professional. I hope that I learned well from him.

Overheard at the Pearly Gates:

"Herbert Swope, here..."

Rest in Peace, sir. And thank you.

Certainly one of the great lyricists of tunes from the masters of sheek and sophistication; Cole Porter,Jerome Kerns,Johnnie Mercer, Harald Arland and all the other talented treasures from a by gone era. Ever so often you'd get to hear the iconic Neal Smith play a few of these fabulous tunes and to hear Mr. Swope sing along made life meaningful again. The class acts will miss the class act.

I was privileged to meet Herbert when I produced his reviews & interview programs at WPTV. Any one who was any one who came to town Herbert knew.

I remember once after a taping, Herbert asked if Marta(my wife) & I would like to come to a "little celebration of his birthday". I figured the old guy was alone, so Marta baked a cake and we headed to what I thought was his PB address.
Well..it was a catered event on a rooftop above Worth Avenue with about 150 well heeled guests. Herbert was touched by the cake and insisted it was placed in front of the two tiered number the caterer had provided.

Interesting guy.

Farewell, HBS...there'll never be another like you !
