Irving GERSTEIN Obituary

GERSTEIN, Irving V.Irving V. Gerstein, 94 years old, of Palm Beach, FL, formerly of New York City, NY, passed away on June 25, 2013. He is survived by: his wife of 71 years, Muriel; his daughter, Nanci; his son-in-law, Robert Schwartz; his grandsons, Jonathan and Daniel and his granddaughter-in-law, Karen Ahrens. He was born in New York City on VE Day, November 11, 1918. He graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School and attended New York University where he later taught graduate level classes. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II, rising to Army Air Corps Captain. He, and other family members, grew their fathers' rug and weather strip business into Thermwell Products Co., Inc., a 100 year old, three generation concern that employs 100s. A champion golf and tennis player, he was a past member of Fresh Meadow Country Club in New York and a member of High Ridge Country Club in Florida. Philanthropy was a major part of his busy life. Among the charities he supported are: North Shore Hospital, UJA, Israel Guide Dogs Foundation, and various breast cancer charities, including the Beth Tortolani Breast Cancer Foundation who, a few years ago honored him as man of the year. Irving always spoke with frankness and sincerity and was quick to work a pun or a joke into any conversation. He was a father figure to those close to him, an advisor to many and generous (almost) to a fault. The family asks that contributions in Irv's memory be made in honor of his grandson being a 10 year survivor to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: www.lls.org or 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605. Phone 914-949-5213 or fax 914-949-6691.
