Jack Okun Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

JACK H. OKUN, DDS, MS “Good Deeds are Eternal” Thousands of beautiful smiles will continue to make the world happier all because of Dr. Jack H. Okun, Orthodontist. Dr. Okun lost his courageous eight-year battle with cancer on October 31, 2005. Born, reared and educated in New York City, he was the only child of the late Louis and Rachel Okun. Dr. Okun attended P.S.#11 Elementary, McCoombs Junior High and graduated from Bronx High School of Science. He was a symphony trained trombone player. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University where he was inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Liberal Arts Honor Society. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from New York University where he was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He then served two years as a captain in the United States Air Force while stationed in London, England. He then attended North Western University in Chicago where he earned a Master of Science degree in Orthodontics. A lifelong dream of living in Florida was fulfilled when he moved to West Palm Beach. He set up his first practice on Belvedere Road. Two years later he designed and built his dream office on Park Avenue in Lake Park where he practiced orthodontics for 37 years. When he retired he donated his dental office equipment to “Floating Dental Clinic” based on a boat in Honduras. Retirement allowed him to pursue his love of music. He played in many concert and Jazz bands as well as charity benefits. He served as president of the Palm Beach Gardens Concert Band. He also played with the Musicmeisters, a local jazz and oompa-pa band. He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and a frequent lecturer at the Palm Beach County Dental Research Clinic. His love of children led him to numerous children's Dental Health activities and school classroom visits. He authored numerous articles in the Journal of the American Dental Association and the American Journal of Orthodontics. Proudest moments for him were the joy he received from the accomplishments of his family. Dr. Okun leaves his wife and soul mate of 38 years, Rosalind of Tequesta, FL; his first-born son, Louis Brian Okun, C.P.A., Tampa, FL and his second born son, Michael Scott Okun, M.D. (wife Leslie Okun) of Gainesville, FL. Multitudes of colleagues and friends will miss his sense of humor and his penchant for always doing it right. Graveside services will be 10 AM Thursday, November 3 at Riverside Memorial Park, Tequesta, FL. Shiva will be observed at the Okun residence in Tequesta. “Our family must translate pain into action and tears into growth.” Therefore, we request donations be made in Dr. Okun's name to Temple Judea Children's Educational Fund, Hospice, or PBG Concert Band Okun Scholarship Fund. Arrangements by Levitt-Weinstein Memorial Chapel, West Palm Beach.

Dr. Okun did my braces in the mid-1970s, and I used to love going to his office. Dr. Okun and his entire staff were always the nicest people. Specifically, I remember all of the Sports Illustrated magazines he had in his office for anyone to read. I honestly credit Dr. Okun for me becoming a huge sports fan!! He was always so nice. I found this obituary as I was reminiscing my own experience with braces while watching my daughter get hers. Funny how life works. Dr. Okun was a great man. I am genuinely saddened to hear of his passing. My hope is that his entire family, and close circle of friends, have found peace in reading these fond memories of him. May he rest in peace.

Dear Okun Family,

I was one of Dr. Okun's first Lake Park patients, back in 1966. I hated going to the dentist until I started my monthly orthodontist appointments, and even though I was in pain, Dr. Okun made it fun. His love for life and infectious spirit buoyed the entire office. I'll never forget seeing him wheel from one patient to another in the large examining room. He always made appointments for "odd" times, like 10:23 (not 10:15 or 10:30). Dr. Okun is someone I will always remember with great fondness.

To the family of Dr Okun

When I read the obituary I shed a tear at his passing. I have two beautiful smiles that I can thank him for. The first was when Dr. Okun first opened his office on Belvedere. My husband and I were not very well off and Dr. Okun worked out a payment plan for my beautiful little girl to have beautiful straight teeth. My son became a patient after he moved to Lake Park. We alway enjoyed our trips to his office as he was always pleasant and had such a great sense of humor.

When you consider the lives he touched and the difference he made in those lives, you can be proud of his contributions.

Dear Roz,

Jack wasn't supossed to leave us. He had too much to do and too many things he hadn't completed. We know he left his mark on so many.

He especially endeared himself to us. Thanks to Meryl, we were able to share some wonderful times together. He and Fred had a special bond and their special club. We are deeply grateful to have been able to share him with you for the short time we knew him. Of course I knew Jack almost 25 years! I just didn't really know him until recently. We will be eternally grateful to have spent special times with you and Jack. We are so broken hearted that we weren't able to be with you during this time. With your love and support he fought a valiant fight. We are just so sad, Roz. We have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a wonderful kind soul. Love,

Sallie and Fred

Dear Okun Family

It was very sad to here of Dr Okun's passing. I was a patient back in the late 60's in Lake Park. I remember my dad saying we can't afford braces. Dr. O said can you afford $7.00 a week till it is paid off? My dad could'nt refuse. I got my yearbook photo taken with a big smile-braces and all. The photographer said,"Don't you want to hide those braces"? No my dad paid for them, and I am proud of them. I remember after he strung them on,and before he cut the excess wire-he would play them like a harp-I always laughed leaving there. If you want to see his work look at my photo in the the class of 68-Riviera Beach High School yearbook.

God Bless

Joe Ivey

It's hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of such a well-lived life.

Roz, I know you will miss Jack, but please remember that you're in my thoughts and prayers every step of the way.

I became very fond of Jack and was so excited the day I called him to know that he remembered who I was.

Time will soften the edges and ease your burden.
