James Pollock Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

JAMES “Jim” HAROLD POLLOCK, M.D. James Harold Pollock, M.D., died on December 18, 2004, after a long courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on April 25, 1931, to Harold and Margaret Pollock in Columbus, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Hester “Tess” Hough Pollock, in May of 2003. He is survived by his four children: his sons, James Scott Pollock (Lourdes) of Boynton Beach, FL and Gregory Hough Pollock (Holly) of Merritt Island, FL, and his daughters, Elise Shankle (Stephen) of Peachtree City, GA and Leslie Bachman (David) of Moorpark, CA; his ten grandchildren: Benjamin, Daniel, and Nathan Shankle, Annalise, Alexander, and Lydia Bachman, Reed and Tessa Pollock, and Khiara and Jenelle Pollock; his sister Marilyn Groezinger (Herman) of Sebring, FL; and his two brothers-in-law Van Hough of Mars Hill, NC and Scott Hough of Reston, VA; and his secretary of 40 years Carol Imboden. Jim grew up in Westerville, OH, and became an avid golfer at an early age. By the age of 14 he was competing and continued to do so for most of his life. He played golf for Westerville High School, Fort Myers High School (where he wintered with his family), and Duke University. While at Duke he was co-captain of the golf team with Mike Souchak. Through the years he won many titles, notably the 1951 Columbus District Amateur Golf Championship (an accomplishment he would later share with Jack Nicklaus who won the title five years later). Pursuing a career in medicine Jim graduated from Duke University and Duke University Medical School in Durham, NC where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and several honorary societies. While at Duke he was elected Inter-Fraternity Council President. Dr. Pollock completed his internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX. While in Dallas he went on to complete his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Baylor, Parkland Memorial, and Scottish Rite Hospitals. When he moved his young family to Boynton Beach in 1961 he became the only Orthopaedic surgeon between Lake Worth and Pompano Beach. Dr. Pollock served on the staff at Bethesda Memorial Hospital and retired in 1986. He was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Boynton Beach where, for many years he was a member of the choir and often performed solos for Sunday services. He was also a member of Kiwanis, and an active supporter of Atlantic (originally Seacrest) High School's football program. As team physician for 20 years Dr. Pollock could be found most Friday nights during football season on the field with the team ready to attend to injuries as they happened. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Boynton Beach 235 SW 6th Ave, Boynton Beach, on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Parkinson's Foundation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Pollock family, and especially to our dear Leslie and Dave, and the kids... What a legacy your dad leaves in you and your family. You have said that your dad taught you so much in the way he gently and lovingly raised your family with a discipline that still serves you today. Your warmth and humor, your practical faith, your ability to bounce back after adversity--these are all traits he has left in you and we pray that they serve you well especially now, just as he intended. God bless you and comfort you during this difficult time... and may the peace of knowing for certain that he is with your mom again, and with our loving Lord, be a source of strength and encouragement for you.

My deepest sympathies to the Pollock family on Dr. Pollock's passing. He was a fine man and so wonderfully involved in the Boynton-Delray communities. My thoughts to Elise, a fellow Class of 1975 graduate at Atlantic High and a wonderful person and friend; Greg, a former Little League and Senior Little League teammate and friend; and Jimmy, also a friend from my AHS days. And to the rest of the family as well, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
