Joan HEDGES Obituary

HEDGES, Joan Maxine
Joan Maxine Hedges, age 70, died peacefully on April 26, 2016 in Lake Worth, Florida. Joan was born on December 14, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York. Joan was the daughter of William and Doris Garfinkle, two dedicated and loving parents to Joan. Joan had a special way about her that made everyone smile. Her laugh was contagious and her cheerful attitude always brought happiness to those around her including students and co-workers from Florida Atlantic University and University of Florida, friends, and family. She was caring and would go out of her way to help others. She was also genuine, a happy person, extremely compassionate and generous. Joan enjoyed crossword puzzles in her free time, and earlier in her life, had fun bowling and playing darts. She worked extremely hard, as a very young mother of two daughters, to be a good mom and a role model. She was dedicated to her daughters in heart and soul always. Joan, a widow, is survived by her daughters Donna Mordis of Boca Raton and Laurie Petritis of Lake Worth, grandchildren Haley and Gabrielle Mordis and Alec, Kera and Robbie Petritis, sister Lynda Moodie of Boynton Beach and sisters-in-law Tyra Marsh and Patrica Haun of Boynton Beach. Joan was loved by her daughters, grandchildren, many cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and close friends. She will be dearly missed. The beautiful lifelong memories Joan created for all will be forever remembered and treasured. A special thank you to the Oasis Nursing home staff that made Joan's days the best they could be by providing her the care, environment and attention she needed.

Joan and I met at FAU. We worked together for many years. She was always the go to person when you needed to learn something new. We shared lunch almost every day. We laugh a lot and cried a lot too. We shared the ups, downs and everything in between. RIP my friend.

Joan and Rusty FAU co-workers and friends.

i met Joan in Oasis. My mother is there. We met with Joan wheeling the halls looking for cookies. I said what kind of cookies do you like Joan? She said any kind, I said O.K. tomorrow you shall have cookies. that's how our friendship began. I brought Joan her cookies and some crossword puzzle books on a regular basis. She was such a wonderful person from our short friendship i enjoyed her so much. she just lit up when she seen me coming down the hall. i went into Joans room one day and she was asleep, their was a lady there who was watching over Joan. I was in such disbelief that Joan was so ill. She always was funny and full of life when i seen her. A few days later Joan passed away, i was heartbroken. my cookie lady was gone. for such a short friendship of a few months i was so sad she was no longer here. Hope you rest well Joan, I will miss you.
