Judith R. BORNE

1939 - 2018

Judith "Judy" R. Borne, 78, of Yarmouth Port Mass and North Palm Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on March 9th, with her beloved family by her side. Judy grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School in 1956. She graduated from Bridgewater State College in 1960. During her senior year at Bridgewater State, Judy starred in the Drama club musical "Presenting Judy Borne." Upon graduation, Judy went to work as a Professor of Physical Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where she taught and mentored countless students as they pursued their careers in Physical Education. Judy volunteered with the Red Cross for twenty years, instructing hundreds of young swimmers to be competent and competitive athletes. When the first condominiums were built in Peabody, Judy was a real estate trail blazer. Through all of those endeavors her avocation was music and entertaining. She traveled the country as the lead singer with the Guy Rotundo Orchestra. Later, Judy performed at the Jack Satter Home and at other active adult communities both in Massachusetts and in Florida. Judy's other great passions were Golf, the Red Sox and the Patriots. As a member of the Chequessett Country Club in Wellfleet and The Links at Boynton Beach, Judy played golf daily. She was a dominant player in the Eastern Cape Cod senior women's golfing circuit where she won many, many tournaments and related awards. As for the Red Sox and the Patriots, Judy considered herself an expert on all things related to these teams and often could be heard coaching the clubs to victory and defending them when they lost. Judy was also a passionate defender of equality. She and eight women successfully sued the Haverhill Country Club for equal golfing access for female members in the landmark case Borne versus Haverhill Golf & Country Club. This landmark decision granted equal access to country clubs for women and is regularly cited in similar cases. Judy leaves behind her treasured partner, Janice McKittrick, to whom she was engaged to be married. She leaves her brother, Jerald and his wife Barbara; their two children Steven and his wife Amy, Deborah, and son David (deceased); grandnephews and niece Eli, Sam, Miles, and Lucia. She also leaves her dear cousin Elinor Lutch and her family. In lieu of services, the family will hold a celebration of Judy's life in the Spring.
