Kyle Conrad Obituary

A star soccer player at Lynn University Bachelor's, master's & online degrees died early Saturday and one of his teammates was injured after both fell from a railroad bridge in the early morning hours Saturday in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Kyle Conrad, a 21-year-old senior from Jensen Beach studying sports management, was pronounced dead, according to Lynn University spokesman Joshua Glanzer. He said Joe Cundall, a 21-year-old senior studying business administration, was treated and released from Broward General Medical Center.

Conrad's death was the latest tragedy for the university this year. Four students and two faculty members were among the estimated 250,000 killed in Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. The university is making available grief counselors and its campus ministry for those mourning Conrad's death, Glanzer said.

"Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends," Glanzer said. "Obviously, we're shocked and saddened. He's a great student here at Lynn. He did very well at the school. He's liked by everybody. The whole campus is really upset by this."

The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on a railroad bridge above the New River at the Las Olas Riverfront entertainment complex, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Matt Little.

One man, whom Lynn officials identified as Conrad, fell from the bridge into the water. Emergency responders arrived, searched the river and found him about 10 minutes later, Little said.

Paramedics rushed him to Broward General, but their "attempts to resuscitate him weren't successful," Little said. Another man, later identified as Cundall, was found hanging from the bridge's trestle.

No additional details about the incident were available Saturday. Officials has not released a cause of death.

The Palm Beach Post in 2007 named Conrad its boys soccer Player of the Year after he graduated with a 3.59 GPA in high school and earned a soccer scholarship to Lynn University. He volunteered at his church and finished his high school career in Jensen Beach with 143 goals and 43 assists.

In a 2007 article from The Palm Beach Post, he was quoted saying he valued his high school soccer teammates. "I'm going to remember these guys forever," Conrad said at the time. "I loved having the chance to start everything new, start new traditions."

During the past four years at Lynn, Conrad has won similar accolades for his soccer talent. For example, The Miami Herald in October reported that he became just the fourth player in school history to score 100 career points.

Conrad was "looking forward" to completing his classes this semester, Glanzer said.

Cundall was born in Dewsbury, England, and similarly has been a standout player at Lynn. According to the team's website, he started all 19 games for the Fighting Knights his junior year and was a key player on a defense that posted seven shutouts and allowed just over a goal per game.

"This affects the whole community, and we just hope that everyone can come together at this time," Glanzer said.

We are remembering wonderful times spent with you. We will never forget the many cross country and track meets and cheering at your soccer games. Playing cards and pasta parties provide comforting memories of you. I hope you are telling the golf story to the angels...it always brings a smile. We are fortunate that you were part of our lives even for a short time. You made everyone around you feel special and loved.

My sincere sympathy to the entire Conrad family. My daughters went to school with Kyle and Mrs. Conrad taught both of my daughters also. I grieve as a parent also, to have to lose, such a gift. Rest in Peace Kyle. God bless your whole family.

Kyle, I never had the honor of coaching you, however I had the pleasure of coaching next to you on the fields of Jensen and seeing your smile light up the field or track. I remember being mesmerized by your work ethic, love of the game, and love for your teammates. I had the honor of watching you build a legacy at Jensen Beach. I remember the night you were crowned Homecoming King, your mom, standing outside the gym door, not wanting to embarrass you or jinx the night, but gleaming with pride. I then watched you work your way around Jensen even after you left, always a supporter, always a role model, always your sister's biggest supporter. You have always been there for your family, your team, and your community. Kyle, you are one of a kind, someone for all of us to cherish in our hearts and carry with us in our lives. You lived life like it should be lived and for that you have blessed us all. Thank you for living within all of us. My heart is heavy with grief, but more importantly filled with your infectious smile and zest for life. God bless the Conrad family!

I had the opportunity, privilege and honor to coach Kyle in track while he was in high school. As a Coach one of my goals is to make the athletes I coach better people by the time they are done competing for me. There was no work to be done in that department for Kyle. He was a tremendous person whom everyone adored. Everyone wanted to be Kyle Conrad. What I didn't plan on was the fact that Kyle would in fact make me a better person. I am a better person, son, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson and friend because I know Kyle Conrad. Every practice I coach, every game I coach and everyday I live will have a piece of Kyle in it. So you see, it's not just the people that Kyle impacted directly himself (which were countless) but part of his legacy will be the people he impacts through me as I continue on in life. I urge everyone who knew him to join me in this effort. Together we can keep Kyle's spirit, strength, easy-going nature and kind heart alive in a world that desperately needs more people like Kyle.
Kyle, I love you like a brother and my heart is broken. Until we meet again.

Kyle-
You were the perfect "ken", the perfect team mate, the perfect date, and homecoming king. There will never be another Kyle and I am so so grateful that I had the extreme pleasure of having you truly bless my life. You belong in heaven. Watch over your family because they will need you in this time and I cant wait to see you again some day. Thank you for changing my life. You will ALWAYS be in my heart!

Kyle was the most amazing person I have ever met. I was able to get the chance to be very close with him and spend a lot of our times together. He is the best person in the world, who would always try to make you smile whether you knew him or not. He is someone who is leaving this world with tons of people looking above missing him. Even if this tragic thing is breaking my heart I know that he watching above me and taking care of all of us. . He will never be forgotten. I miss you so much kyle... my love for you is something that will never go away<3 I love you..ALWAYS!
