Lillian Krieger was one of the most amazing women I have ever been privileged to know. I met Lillian in 1988, soon after I was hired as Director of the Women's Studies Center at Florida Atlantic University, and Lillian "retired from retirement" to become the program's first secretary. Expanding on her strong secretarial and organizational skills, Lillian learned to use a computer in her 70s, doing complicated mail merges to reach all our students with personally addressed letters, in those years before email. I will always remember her intelligence, loyalty, persistence and drive, consistently employed whether scrounging furniture for our new program from all over campus, or organizing graduation ceremonies for our students. Her consistent concern for everyone associated with the Center, particularly our students, helped it become a home on campus for many. She was a most supportive friend, and became like a second mother to me, especially after my mother died in 1990. My son knew her as "Grandma Lillian." She was a model of engaged, active aging, and I can only hope to follow her example of lifelong commitment to family and community, as well as to personal growth and learning. She will always be remembered and missed.
