Maxine, not a day goes by without my thinking about you. It was so unfair to have your "life" snuffed out as it was, but your "life" lives on in all the people you touched. And I am lucky to be one of those people -- I will remember you always. Miss you and our wonderful dinners together - your picture is in my home as a reminder of you - a beautiful person both inside and out. Caring - about all creatures, large and small. You are an inspiration to us all. Love you girl, Sara

Max--
What can I say? I miss your morning calls, your smile, your zest for life, your positive outlook, your enthusiasm, your advice, your stories, YOU!! I was so blessed to have you in our lives for as long as we did. You became a wonderful "surrogate grandma" and I'm going to miss sharing all the wonderful moments and holidays with you.
I know you're there watching over all of us--you did bring us (your friends) together. You're my angel!!
Love you girlfriend,

Each morning Maxine would call from her daily walk usually to just chat or laugh about some silly adventure we had. We seemed to get the biggest giggles over things others may think strange, however that is how Maxine was a friend you could be yourself. We travelled together to many places and had definitely walked the days away. We shared a special friendship as most each of us have with her. We are many different persons sharing many different sides of Maxine. The one common bond we had is we shared the love of a friendship very dear to our hearts with a very special Lady. I will miss her and remember her always as she has been my friend for many years. It is difficult to realize she is no longer here on earth, but I know she is among us and will always be a part of our lives.
A short while after I received the call that Maxine had passed away I heard a BELL ring and I knew an ANGEL had received her wings.

Love you girlfriend! You will be so incredibly missed. You insisted on being my friend almost 10 years ago when I was going through a rough time in my life. And, we became such wonderful buddies. We enjoyed our travels to New Zealand, London, Mont Saint Michel, Vancouver, Napa, Boca, Miami Beach...and just going to the movies, a goofy play, or sharing an entree at some new restaurant with a great bottle of wine. We loved our Porsches, our cats, our disagreements over the latest political mess, and the array of jokes passed along by our friends. You loved life, adventure, your beloved cats, and friends, friends, friends. I am so honored to have experienced your shining light.

Maxine was my one of my best friends meeting her in the Bahamas as we both were on sailboats about 24 yrs. ago and we instantly became great friends. We shared many wonderful dinners together with great wine and celebrating our June birthdays together for years, yes this past June being our last one together.
A beautiful person in every way. Oh, how I miss my dear friend.
and "Don't forget to have a terrific day", she often would say.

Our dear friend has departed but there are many, many fond memories that will always remind us of her. For one, we are the proud "parents" of Maxine's two cats, "Simba" and "Shadow" which we picked up in Florida and brought to California. We were in Florida the next day after we heard the news but still refused to believe Maxine was really gone even after we arrived. Her Memorial Service and luncheon was attended by many good friends and relatives.
We are sure Maxine is remodeling her new accommodations and we can't wait to see the black, gray and white decor she has put together.
We will miss you dear friend.

Maxine was a joy to be with, and delightful to see. She weathered many hardships with style and grace, and never forgot her beloved cats. Her generousity was best reflected in funding research to benefit her favorite species.

I knew Maxine for over 20 years, she was always cheerful, fun and full of life. I think of her as a classy lady who loved all animals, especially her beloved cats. She was kind to everyone she met, enjoyed a great bottle of wine and lived life well; I miss you Max. With Love, Dolores

Maxine was such a nice person. It's really hard to believe she is gone when just recently she stopped by to chat, which she often did. Maxine loved her animals caring for the strays and homeless. She loved her walks, too. Often she could be spotted walking the neighborhood to stay in shape or just to check things out. Our most recent conversation centered on what a good place she was at in her life. She said " she was the happiest she'd been in a long time." I'm saddened by her unexpected departure but honored to have known her and called her friend.

I have known Maxine about seven years as a jogger/walker. When I first think if Maxine, I think of "spunky." When problems confronted Maxine, it was a matter of how to overcome them. She would become annoyed, angry, but never overcome.
She loved cats of course. I don't think I can look at a cat without thinking of her.
She had a great sense of humor and was one of the most open people I have ever known.
You will be missed.

Maxine was a wonderful friend of ours here at the CCAH, School of Veterinary Medicine, UCDavis. Her generosity through the years, enabled us to advance our knowledge of how to better prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in beloved cats.
Maxine, as I look at the lists before me of the many studies you helped to progress, I cannot help but express heartfelt thanks on behalf of many faculty, residents, students and staff for what you have helped them accomplish. You will be sorely missed by many (in spirit and deeds).
Sincerely,

Maxine was a devoted cat lover. It was her concern for the health and welfare of all cats that first brought her to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.
As the school's Assistant Dean for Development, I had the opportunity to visit Maxine at her homes in Los Gatos and Boca Rotan. Her cats were always with her, as was her love for her friends and travel with them.
I came to admire Maxine's quick whit and spark. We shared an appreciation for good wine and sports cars. She also loved challenges, which she usually overcame in short order.
It was an honor to be one of Maxine's links with the School of Veterinary Medicine. I feel fortunate to have known her.
Sincerely,
Kelly Nimtz,

I know Maxine as a stalwart and reliable trail companion from our hikes together up Black Mountain, Fremont Peak, and Half Dome. None of those are for sissies!
I had a good laugh seeing her described as an elderly woman, and a few tears over our loss.

My wife and I met Maxine about a year ago when we moved into the home right next to hers in Los Gatos. She became an immediate friend because of our mutual love of animals and particuarly cats. She and I would take a walk every Saturday morning down to Lucky's and have a banana and cup of coffee.
I was looking forward to her return and seeing her again even though we stayed in touch by telephone.
Although we went out for dinner on a few occasions and had a martini or two together, we feel a real loss in that we didn't get to know her better. But in the short time we did know her she became very dear to our hearts. We'll miss her a lot.

Maxine was a personal friend of the Center for Companion Animal Health at UC Davis and I had the privilege of personally knowing her for many years. She loved life to the fullest and we both shared a love of cats. Her fun-loving, and outgoing personality will be greatly missed. This was indeed a terrible tragedy for all of her friends and colleagues.
The School of Veterinary Medicine and the Center for Companion Animal Health will sorely miss her.

Maxine - I see your vibrant, sparkling, perky eyes and your zesty love of life. I was blessed to be one of your many friends within and outside of our running club. It was always a joy to run along side you or hike with you wherever that was. You spoke your mind and one always knew where you stood on any topic -- you had immense integrity. I will always remember you when I go to the San Antonio park to exercise.
Take care my friend. Big hugs to you.

We often talk about Maxine when looking back at special running memories and good times with our running friends. She definitely made a lasting impression on those around her and will continue to be remembered by us as a very special, caring and adventuresome person. We hope she is at peace...

When I read that our friend Maxine, "a 70 year old elderly woman", had died I was shocked and then deeply saddened. The word "elderly" fits only as a sterotype. Maxine and I hiked trails in the hills of Calif. I would want to take the shorter route, 5 mile, and she often wanted the 7 mile route. She was a strong woman: strong in her love of her friends, strong in her convictions, strong in her love of animals, and strong physically. She had a big heart and I was looking forward to her arrival here in September. I miss her and am glad to have known her.

Maxine Adler died July 31st 2009. She was a greater lover of animals and donated large amounts of her wealth and time to causes surrounding animal welfare.
She split her time between her home in Boca Raton and her home in Los Gatos. My wife and I knew her thru her running out in California. She had run many marathons over the years and while she had cut back on her running recently, she was an avid walker and exerciser. We ran or walked with her 2 or 3 times a week at Rancho San Antonio Park while she was in California.
She was a big traveler and had seen a lot of the world. She took two years and sailed around the world some 20 years ago. My wife and I had only traveled with her in California, but some of our friends had been to Europe and Africa with her over the years.
Being a runner, she was in excellent health for her age and I’m sure most people might have guessed she was only in her 50’s. She loved good food and fine vine. My wife will have many remembrances of her and dinner, with a top rated bottle of vine. I remember our many dinners and evenings talking or playing games while traveling or after running.
We hope her cats are being cared for by someone in Boca Raton now, as she lived for her cats.
We and her friends will miss her.
