I never had the privilege to know this hero, however, I remember that sad day when he returned home and evening writing this brings a tear to my eye for him, his family, and all of the countless other men and women in uniform and their families who do what they do so that we can do what we do from the comfort of our homes far removed from the harshness of battles fought on our behalf.
Rest in Eternal Peace PFC Metcalf. Your service and sacrifice are NOT forgotten...

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Metcalf Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Michael J. Metcalf US Army Private 1st Class. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Sounds like he lived an honorable, good life while he was here. He has certainly earned a fine place in the afterlife with our father in heaven. I am proud to see all the wonderful things all those who knew him have to say about this warrior...I'll meet you in heaven when my time comes, Michael. I am proud you chose to be a sheepdog along with me...must be something in the name.

To the Metcalf family,
My heart goes out to you, especially Mom. My son Wesley went through bootcamp with Mike and thought alot of him. He is now in Afghanistan. It hit him hard to hear about Mike. Mike was selfless in helping save another at the risk of his own life. God tells us No greater Love than a man lay his life down for another. This describes MIke. Know that you all are in my heart and thoughts. May God continue to comfort you in these hours and weeks ahead.

No words can express the heart break we all, at the Cadillac Ranch feel for the loss of “Cowboy Mike”. He was a very special person and we all loved him very much. None of us will forget the good times we shared with him – he was certainly a force of LIFE and a brilliant soul! We wanted you to know that you and he are in our thoughts and prayers ..and that we have not forgotten the sacrifice he has made for us. We are putting Mike's picture up on our Memorial Wall at our country nightclub here in Fayetteville, North Carolina where Mike spent many happy nights. I think he would have liked that. His life touched ours and we will never forget him.
With much love,

As a Gold Star mother ,myself, I was deeply saddened upon hearing the news about the loss your precious son, Mike. There are no words, there is no advice anyone can give you, including myself. As I sit here grieving still for my own beloved son, I grieve for your's as well. No parent should have to endure this much pain. I take comfort in knowing that Sam is in Heaven and he is only a breath away from me.I have God's blessed assurance that I will see him again. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God's grace continue to surround you and hold you up during the long days ahead.

Hey Brother, I am here at Saint John's walking the campus of fresh cut grass and hurried activity as it prepares for graduation weekend. You are a part of a proud heritage that over the last one hundred years as provided this country with young men to serve in its wars. In ways Saint Johns will live forever and so you will live forever. The Academy performed a ceremony for you in the chapel, but I wanted to thank you for doing your duty and when it mattered most, you led the way.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Michael will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

MISS ME... BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road,
and the sun has set me free...
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long,
And not with your head bowed low...
Remember the love we once shared,
Miss me.. but let me go.
For this journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone...
Is all a part of the Master's Plan,
A step on the road home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to the places we know....
And bury your sorry somewhere in the trees...
Miss me... but let me go!

THIS IS FOR PFC METCALF.
Paratrooper Heaven.
I hope there's a drop zone, way up in the sky,
Where PARATROOPERS old and young can go, when it's time to say goodbye...
A place where a guy could drink his cold beers, for a friend and a comrade whose memory held dear...
A place where no Leg or Blackshoe could tread, nor a Pentagon type would e're be caught dead!
Just a quaint little club, for a drink and good smoke,
Where they like to sing aloud, and tell a good joke...
The kind of place, where a lady can go,
And feel safe and protected by the Soldiers she knows...
There must be a place for PARATROOPERS to go, when their eyes get too weary, and their drinks get too low...
Where the whiskey is old and the women are young, And songs 'bout jumping, fighting and dying are sung...
Where you'd see all the Troopers you'd served with before, And they'd call out your name, as you came thru the door...
They would pour you a drink, for your thirst, oh so bad,
And declare to all others, "This here Paratrooper is a fine lad!"
And then thru the haze, spot a brother grunt, Not seen in years, since by your side he did jump!
He'd nod his old head and grin ear to ear, "Welcome home brother, I'm pleased that you're here!"
For this is the place where PARATROOPERS come,
When the battles are over, and the wars have been won...
They've come here at last, to be safe and afar, From the government clerk and the civilian management czar...
The politicians and lawyers, the feds and the noise,
Where all the hours are happy, amongst good old boys!
You can relax with a tall cool one and
take your well-deserved rest...
For you made it to Airborne Heaven,
PARATROOPER, you've passed your last test!
PFC Metcalf, Thank you for your service, and your ultimate sacrifice. Brother, You Will Not Be Forgotten.
