When my father Capt. Jim Metcalf was stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB in 1955 then Lt. Doubleday lived two houses down from us. On several occasions when our folks went out to the Officers club together I was called upon to baby-sit the Doubleday children. They were always really good kids and the Doubledays would always treat me well. They were always so down to earth and I had no knowledge they were from famous families until many years later when I learned they became owners of the Mets. Great memories of our tour to Myrtle Beach AFB.

I met Nelson Doubleday Jr sometime in the late fifties or early sixties. I was the mess boy on the Ogden Phipps yacht..."Vergemere." We were down at Cat Cay in the Caribbean and to make a long story short Nelson and I ( a nineteen year old second cook) ended up on top of the flat roof of one of the buildings and the waiter was bringing drinks to us, up the ladder we had used to get to the roof. He was a Down to earth kind gentleman. At times he would cook his own Breakfest. I have never forgotten that cruise after all these years. God Bless Him.

I am writing this evening on behalf of Sybil Daniel who worked for and with Mr. Doubleday at Doubleday, Publishers for many years in the various New York offices. Sybil thought the world of Mr. Doubleday and she wants me to pass on to his family just what a kind and generous person he was and what a pleasure it was to work around Doubleday for more than 30 years with him.

Every person at Doubleday knew Mr. Doubleday and he treated everyone with such genuine kindness that will always be remembered.

As a young florist with a new business it was such an honor and a pleasure to arrange flowers for Nelson Doubleday.
This was a man of great taste and style that appreciated art, beauty and flowers in a profound way.
It has been my good fortune to have worked for Sandra and Nelson for over thirty years.I have arranged flowers and decorations for weddings, birthday celebrations and Christmas parties too numerous to mention.
I will never forget his friendliness, kindness and generosity. My heart is filled with joyful memories of a very special man.
Thank you for everything, and i know that there will be a Christmas party up in heaven this year the likes of which no one has ever seen before.

I was a volunteer at one of the golf tournaments in Northville when Mr. Doubleday came by the VIP tent. We struck up a conversation when I said I was a devoted Mets fan. He was so nice and responsive to my enthusiasm. The next day he came up to me and out of his pants pocket came an official Mets baseball signed by him. I still have and cherish that ball and memories .God's Blessings for a great , sweet man.

As a young NYC police officer I was assigned to Shea Stadium. Often I would visit with Mr. Double day up in his suite, he would treat you with the greatest of respect!! He would invite me up and introduce me to hall of fame players. He would pour you a cold one and fix you a plate to eat!! He treated everyone with dignity and respect! He would ride the elevator by the press gate that usually had beer spilled all over the floor, and greet everyone with a smile and ask how they were doing!!RIP Mr. Doubleday, and thank you!!

So sorry to hear of loss. During this time there will be tears, but please keep in mind that even Jesus gave way to tears when someone he loved died. this occasion was recorded in the Bible at John 11:35.

From one who has experienced such grief, I offer my sympathy.

As a member of the Cuckoos Nest, I became friendly with Bookworm. I found him to be very friendly, caring, a great sense of humor and was thoughtful and generous. I remember when my wife and I bought our first house, he unexpectedly sent us a whole case of wine.
He will be missed.

Nellie was a champion in everything he did. My late brother Bobby Pratt & I never enjoyed anyone's company more than Nellie. As a friend so correctly said "he was the king of fun". He was that & so much more. Rest in peace old friend your job is done & save a tee time for me in that big golf course up yonder. I'll miss you

I worked in the International Divison, Feffer & Simons and for a number of years was the Sales Director for Africa.

One of my fondest memories was flying to Washington DC with a number of dignitaries from Nigeria on his personal plane. A thrill of a life time!

The very first ballgame my sons watched was in his box at Shea Stadim. Sharing his tickets with me was another thrill of a life time!

For me, he will always be remembered as a regular guy, one with a captivating smile and a person that made you feel comfortable.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Some years back I was Mr. Doubleday's FedEx man at his home and office in Locust Valley. He was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I've ever met. He was very funny and generous and I never saw him speak any differently to people whether they were rich, poor or anywhere in between. He was a real gentleman. My condolences to his family and all else who knew. He was a special person and will be missed.
