Pauline MacARTHUR Obituary

MacARTHUR, Pauline Ellen

Pauline Ellen MacArthur, 99, of Hobe Sound, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. Pauline was born November 23, 1914 in Fairgrove, MI and has been a resident of Hobe Sound since 1952. In May of 1944 she married John MacArthur, III "Jack", of Levering, MI. In the spring of 1952 Pauline and Jack, with their three daughters, moved to the SW corner of Bridge Road and US 1. At that time the business was called The Farm, appropriate as the new owners, Jack and Pauline, both grew up on farms in Michigan. The family increased in size with the birth of two Native sons, John and Harry. In the mid-60s, with two daughters away from home, Pauline returned to teaching, utilizing the Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics she had earned from North Central College in Naperville, IL. She taught home economics at Stuart Middle School until the mid 70's. Over the years all of the children moved away. Their careers have taken them all over the U.S. and other parts of the world. The restaurant transformed to a beverage-only hangout, and in their retirement years Jack and Pauline poured coffee and served beer to the Natives. Jack died in 1986. Harry, now a chef, returned in 1989. He remodeled the kitchen and the business was renamed Harry and the Natives. Pauline worked most days at the restaurant. She could be seen chatting with customers, singing while she waitressed, or keeping track of the finances. Pauline loved to travel. She walked a section of the Great Wall of China when she was 80, and climbed Machu Picchu at 86, after which, she cruised down the Amazon and planted a tree in the Amazon Rain Forest. A strong supporter of the community, Pauline volunteered at The Manors at Hobe Sound for over 40 years. In 1993 she was named Volunteer of the Year, for the State of Florida Home Health Care Association, for her work. She was a member of Hobe Sound Community Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for over 50 years. Pauline is survived by her loving children, Paula Cooper of Hobe Sound; Linda Thurm of California; Sally McNeilan of Virginia; John MacArthur, IV of Hawaii, J. Harry MacArthur of Hobe Sound; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John MacArthur, III "Jack". Memorial Contributions may be made to Pauline MacArthur Scholarship Fund, Indian River State College Foundation, Inc., 3209 Virginia Avenue, Fort Pierce, FL 34981 or https://www.irscfoundation.org/p/96/donate-now A Memorial Service celebrating Pauline's life will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Hobe Sound Bible Church, Gomez Ave, Hobe Sound.

I met Pauline only one time on my visit to Florida, but she knew my mother well and I felt a connection with her immediately. She made quite an impression on me and I will never forget her. My mother, Alma Klemens, also sends her deepest sympathy. She feels that Pauline was a wonderful person and she will be missed. I truly agree.

I only met this beautiful lady a few years ago when I came to visit my son and he took me to Harry's and told me about Mrs. MACARTHUR and how she always smiled and greeted the customers and made you feel so welcome. I have been there every visit to Hobe Sound since looking forward to seeing this amazing lady. I know she will be missed as I will always think of such a dedicated lady and delightful example for others when I return to visit again.

I will always remember the day i brought my brother in there for his birthday(visiting from Colorado). I told Mom that it was his birthday and she stood up and proceeded to sing "Happy Birthday" to him. I bet you're singing to a whole new audience now! I'll always remember that sweet smile of yours.

I will always remember the wonderful lady at Harry and the Natives singing as she worked. Her flowers from her garden were on every table. She may have passed on but her spirit will always remain with us.
