Robert WOLLENBERG Obituary

WOLLENBERG, Robert I.

Robert I. Wollenberg of Boca Raton, FL passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 at the age of 86. He was at home, held in the arms of his family. His courageous fight against small cell neuroendocrine cancer lasted two and half years, during which time he lost his beloved wife of 60 years. A 39 year resident of Boca Raton, Bob grew up in northern New Jersey. Born May 1, 1927 to an Italian immigrant mother who came to the U.S. via Ellis Island, and a father of German descent, he was raised in Paterson, NJ. Bob joined the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. Following this he attended and graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1951 he married his teenage sweetheart, Joanne Phelan. After working his way up as an electrical engineer, he purchased his father's business, Wollenberg Electric Company upon the passing of his father. He was responsible for large scale commercial electrical installations in northern New Jersey's hospitals, schools, and churches. During this time he raised a family of four children living first in Wayne, NJ and later, Saddle River, NJ. When he retired to Florida at age 47, sitting still was not an option. He acquired his builder's and real estate licenses, forming Bradford Construction Company. He designed and built numerous homes in Boca Raton, as well as his lifelong dream of a log cabin which he built in 2007 in North Carolina. In1983 he purchased Nina Raynor boutique in Delray Beach, FL. With his wife, Joanne and later his son, Bobby, the boutique became one of the most renowned women's stores in the country. His daughter Cathy joined the business full-time in 2011. Bob was a long time member of the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton. More than anything, he enjoyed his family, friends, working hard and good Italian food. A devout Catholic, he is survived by his brother William, Mountain View, CA, his children Jimmy (Cindy) Helena, MT, Cathy Ann (Warren) Sauer Orlando, FL, Craig, and Bobby, grandchildren Jessie Ann, Sonny, Jamie, Caitlin, Kyle, and Cole, and great grandchildren Paedyn and Clara. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Monday, April 28 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the back of the church beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Bob's memory to Purdue University Student Scholarship Support for Electrical and Computer Engineering School or the Lynn Cancer Institute of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation. Glick Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
