He was born in Winooski, Vermont on January 25, 1920, the son of Euclide and Lea (Rabidoux) Lapointe, both deceased. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and George "Zum" Lapointe. He attended Winooski Schools and joined the Army National Guard in 1940 and was inducted into Federal Service in 1941. Roland served for nearly five years in the U.S. Army during World War ll with the 43rd Infantry Division, Pacific Theatre, seeing combat for nearly three years. He participated in many campaigns against the Japanese in Guadalcanal, the Northern Solomons, New Guinea and Luzon. Initially a medic, he later became a heavy machine gunner and received several decorations and citations to include the Philippine Liberation ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign ribbon, two Purple Hearts, and the Bronze Star for bravery. He is also survived by one sister, Rita D. Hunt and her husband, Jim, of Shelburne, Vermont and by two sisters-in-law, June Best and Cathryn Lapointe. Roland also leaves several nieces and nephews residing in Florida, Pennsylvania and Vermont and most especially by two very special nieces, Kathy Santerre and June Plant of Vermont where he spent many enjoyable weeks each summer visiting family and friends. To all of Roland,s family-------- I had the priviledge of working with Roland In West Palm Beach from 1972 through 1979. I considered myself to be one of a multitude of people to call Roland a friend. Anyone who met him could never forget him. I never knew of his Army experiences as he never mentioned this aspect of his life. True heroes never do. Jane and I have so many memories of this wonderful man. Roland, your family are very lucky to have had you among them as all of your friends , at this time , share in their grief. Keep them smiling up there old friend. Jim and Jane Pickett

To the Family of Roland Lapointe,

Please accept my sympathy for your loss. I am a member of St. Juliana Church where my mother and I usually attended the 4:30 mass on Saturdays and where we met Roland some years ago. I looked forward to seeing him at church. He always had a smile for me. I would also see him sometimes while having breakfast with my husband and daughter at Howley's Restaurant, where I believe I met his grandson on one occasion. Roland was very proud of his family and grandchildren.

I had been remiss in attending mass regularly in recent months due to hurricanes and my mother's battle with cancer. When I did attend and didn't see Roland, I thought perhaps he was up north. But then I saw his name on the prayer list, along with my mother's, and last weekend in church learned of his passing.

My mother died on December 16th. The cards and notes that I received from her friends were very much a comfort to me, as I hope mine is to you.

I will miss Roland.

Sincerely,

Katherine Matthews
