William Ziff Obituary

While his New York magazine publishing firm was flourishing and earning him a spot on Forbes list of the richest billionaires in America, William B. Ziff Jr. yearned to come home to Florida.

In the early 1980s, he scoured the Florida east coast before settling for an 11-acre ocean-to-Intracoastal Waterway estate at the south end of Manalapan. He bought it for $5 million in 1985.

There he fashioned a magnificent tropical garden, built a 42,000-square-foot mansion, drilled a tunnel beneath A1A and transformed an 8-acre spoil island dubbed Beer Can Island into the $1.1 million Bird Island Sanctuary.

Mr. Ziff died of prostate cancer Saturday at his Pawling, N.Y., home. He was 76.

Robert, Dirk, and Daniel, also Paul, Jim, and Jeff,

My condolences on the loss of your father and uncle. The years I spent working for him taught me so much about conducting one's self with integrity while never taking anything too terribly seriously. He will be missed by many.

Robert, Dirk, Daniel and Family,

It deeply saddened me to hear the news of your father. He was a great man with a great love for his garden and family. I could see it every time that you visited during my 4 year tenure at the Manalapan estate. Please accept my deepest sympathy and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.
