Roger Scheffert Obituary

Roger Alan Scheffert

Oct. 24, 1951 - Nov. 17, 2023

NORMAL - Roger Alan Scheffert of Normal, IL, died on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 12:39 p.m. at the age of 72. Roger was born on October 24, 1951, in Bloomington, IL, to Merril and Susan (Grey) Scheffert.

Roger graduated from Normal Community High School in 1969. He married Sandra (Whiteside) Scheffert on November 8, 1980. They were married for 24 years until her death in 2004. The couple welcomed Ryan Alan in 1981, and Sara Kaye in 1984.

Roger's passion in life was cars, specifically classics and hot rods. His main hobbies were modifying, building, and driving his cars and trucks, attending car shows, and building model cars. During his life he built several vehicles worth mentioning - a modified 1955 Chevrolet hardtop, a 1938 Chevrolet street rod with a matching trailer, a 1980 Chevrolet pick-up C10, and a 1950 Chevrolet pick-up. He also owned a 1957 Chevrolet pro street, car built by his good friend Ivan Ward.

His entire career was focused on repair and restoration of vehicles in the Bloomington/Normal area. He began at age 16 at Normal Welding, then went on to work at Morris Tick, Staley Truck GMC Peterbilt, JC Penney Automotive Department, George Thornton's, S&S Painting, and Central Illinois Kenworth. He owned his own business, Classic Restorations, from 1984-1989. He hired high school student Mike Patton during the Classic Restorations years and Mike became a trusted and skilled workman who is now a very successful body shop owner in Lexington, IL. Roger worked at Bob Dennison Ford for 17 years before semi-retiring in 2006. He fulfilled a lifelong dream of being a bus driver, which he did with Unit 5 from 2006-2010. He finished his working years with JoPac Auto Parts as a delivery driver. Roger possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of automobiles, but his expertise was body repair and painting. He could fix or build anything, a skill that extended beyond cars into the realm of home renovation.

Roger was a patient and quiet person who loved a good joke and a witty play on words. He enjoyed WWII and Western movies, the Atlanta Braves, and the Beach Boys. His favorite color was orange. He had the best laugh and smile.

Roger is preceded in death by his wife; his father; his mother; his brother, Merril Scheffert; and his son, Todd Scheffert. Roger is survived by and will be greatly missed by his son, Ryan (Chandra) Scheffert; his daughter, Sara (Philip) Bourque; his granddaughter, Milah Scheffert; close family members: Randy and Peggy Richard; and close friends: Butch Long, Keith Monkman, Mike Patton, and Andy Wood.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Carmody Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington. A private burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. Roger requested that attendees wear casual clothes (no suits!) and his favorite color – orange.
