BLOOMINGTON - Stephen J. Sweeney, 75, of Bloomington, passed away at 6:36 a.m., on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., on Sunday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington. Interment will immediately follow services at Holy Cross Cemetery, Merna.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Homes for Hope or OSF St. Joseph Medical Center Chapel.

He was born March 30, 1949 in Bloomington, son of Paul R. and Madonna Mulcahey Sweeney. He married JoAnn Alewel on October 24, 1970 at Holy Trinity Church, Bloomington.

Surviving are his wife, JoAnn, Bloomington; their children: Stephanie (Kevin) Hudson, Norfolk, VA, Daniel (Traci) Sweeney, Bloomington, Bill (Megan) Sweeney, Downers Grove, Sara (Bob) Sears, Bloomington and Casey (Cassi) Sweeney, Antioch and 12 grandchildren: Connor, Ryan & Blake Harris, Jake & Phoebe Sweeney, Mikayla & Nora Sweeney, Tyler, Brady & Lauren Sears and Kaylee & Ellie Sweeney. Also surviving are two sisters: Paula Sweeney, Bloomington and Mary (Don) Reid, Carlinville; a sister-in-law, Judy Evans, Bloomington; four nieces and nephews: Katie, Laura, David & Leeanne and many, many cousins.

He was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter, Katherine Sweeney and an infant sister.

Steve was a 1967 graduate of Trinity High School and received his Associate's Degree from Spoon River Junior College. Steve went to work for the Illinois State Highway Department of Transportation, retiring after 25 years, and he also farmed with his father. Steve enjoyed gardening and working concessions. He was a former member of the Jaycee's Club, Knights of Columbus and helped at St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He was a loving husband, devoted father and was very involved with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
