Walter Newman Obituary

Walter D. Newman III, beloved husband and father, went to be with the Lord on June 1St, 2007. Many may remember him as the owner of Walt's Sports and Trophys prior to his retirement in 2004. Walt coached soccer and Little League for many years and was Scout Master for Boy Scout Troup 773. He served as president of the Paradise High School Sports Boosters for the past six years, seeing completion of a new baseball field and all weather track. He was currently working on the new artificial turf football field funding as well as completing new stands for the high school baseball field.

He was a founding member of the Tuscan Ridge Golf Club. He held memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans after serving his country in the Viet Nam War.

The driving passion of Walt's life was his unending love of our children and sports. During the twenty three years he operated first, Runner's Paradise, which became Walt's Sports and Trophys he saw the second generation of Paradise children come in for their baseball and soccer uniforms, their parents reminding him that they bought their first shoes and uniform from him. Numerous local athletes who couldn't afford shoes for their chosen sport didn't do without, Walt would see to it that they had what they needed.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mica Gilkey, son Daniel Newman and in laws, William and Virgie Gilkey.

Cremation provided by Chapel of the Pines. Memorial services will be held at First Assembly of God, 955 Elliot Road on Friday, June 8th at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held immediately after the service. Please sign the guest book at paradisepost.com

Hi there Scoutmaster,
We just finished on my son's Eagle Scout Project over Memorial Day weekend. He helped restore the veterans memorial at our cemetery in town. It was quite the project trying to fit it in on weekends when I had time and the Idaho weather wasn't getting in the way. He's preparing to staff summer camp for our heritage year at Camp Morrison before we transition our council to the Bradley Scout Reservation next year. The BSR is closed this summer for renovations with much needed funds that were made possible by the sale of Morrison. It's not quite a Camp Lassen but we're hoping to make it a high adventure base on this side of the country. Mandi and I just celebrated 19 years of marriage this week - time flies.
My time helping out with Scouting continues as the council NYLT coordinator and on our risk management committee. Greg is learning to drive and can't wait to start learning to drive off road to the many camp sites we've been to over the years.

Hi Scoutmaster. It's been another year and your legacy continues. I took over as our troop's Scoutmaster here in Idaho and took our Scouts out on their first backpacking trip last weekend. I'm on staff for NYLT next month and will be the course director next year. We celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary this weekend and Greg made First Class, currently serving as ASPL. I'm grateful for the time we were able to spend together when I was a Scout and do my best daily to honor that legacy.

Hard to believe it's been 15 years already Scoutmaster. Your impact continues. My son Gregory just made Tenderfoot and I'm the committee chair for Troops 255B and 255G. Last week I plotted the course of our Lassen to Lassen 50 miler and relived the memories of the Pacific Crest Trail with Troop 773. I'm hoping to ramp up backpacking in our troop in the coming years. Miss you Walt.

It was an honor to know Walt, he touched the lives of each of our children as well as the community at large. His selfless giving should be an inspiration to us all. He was "the salt of the earth" and will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to the family, may the Lord comfort your hearts, and His peace which passes all understanding be with you. 1 Cor. 15:53-58

I was deeply shocked when I read the front page of the Paradise Post on that Saturday morning to learn about the loss of a wonderful person, Walt. My few short years of working with him as his massage therapist were always a privilege and delight. He would always give me a warm hug after his massage and say "You're the greatest, Donna." He truly influenced me to be a better person from knowing him. My heart goes out to you, Mica and Danny. How privileged you were to have him as your dear Father and Husband. May your fond memories and love bless and heal you at this time of sorrow. Fondly, Donna Fenyes

Walt gave our son, A.J. Grantham so much of himself. As A.J.s Scout Master, Walt taught him lessons of life and living that you could not get from a book. He was always there to help. His son, Dan became a very good and close friend to my son A.J. Driving from California to Idaho to be at there for his wedding. Walt instilled this love of family and importances of friends. He will be dearly missed by all of us. God needed him now. We were blessed to have him for this short time.

Walt was a boy's boy and a man's man. He stood for what he knew was right. He went out of his way to make the life of other people better. The legacy Walt leaves us with makes his departure all that much bitter and his impact on us on throughout our lives all the much more sweeter. His unwaivering love for children and the community carries on through his works, family and friends. Walt embodied every point of the Scout Law proudly. Among the many for whom I have had a chance to share a portion of my life with, there is no finer man, Scoutmaster or friend than Walt Newman. Your departure from this world came as a deep and sudden shock. The impact you had on my life personally goes beyond any words or measure. The gift of selflessness and personal self sacrafice continues in my own life, just as it was instilled by you from your own personal experiences. I understand God has a greater task for you. We will miss you always.

Walt was our "business neighbor" when we had the hardware store across the street from what was then Runner's Paradise...his contribution to the Paradise sports community, especially the kids, was enormous. Not only will he live on forever in our hearts, his optimism, tireless hard work and enthusiasm, and his warm, generous spirit, are beacons of hope and inspiration to those of us who remain. You have truly been an inspiration, Walt - I guess our Lord need a new field or track, for you left us too soon. ?

Very few people leave such a nice foot print on a community. Walt was one of these people. Before I met him, I knew who he was through the work he did with the high school, for kids and through other community members that knew him. Last year he showed up out of nowhere and helped Mark with some of the set up for the first Chocolate Fest for the Boys & Girls Club. Just a nice guy with a big heart! We are all lucky to have known him. He will be missed by more of us than anyone will be able to count.
