Dorothy Alexander Obituary

Dorothy Alexander, of La Porte, TX, passed away on September 29, 2012 and is now peacefully resting in God's care. A woman of exemplary faith, she was born on December 1, 1931 in Clyde, TX to Ammon and Maggie Petty, who preceded her in death, along with her sister and three brothers. Her faith sustained her throughout her life and in the years battling cancer her message to her family being, "I shall live for Jesus that I might see you again."

She is survived by her loving and devoted family including the husband of almost sixty years, Jimmy, whom she married on August 14, 1953. She is also survived by her daughter Jan Lawler and son-in-law Hal of La Porte, Texas, and son Sterling Alexander and daughter-in-law Doris of Pasadena, Texas. Surviving grandchildren include Chris Alexander and wife Misty, Matt Alexander and wife Lindsay, Charlotte Alexander, Kathryn Lawler and fiancé Danny, John Lawler, Andrew Alexander and great granddaughter Abby, along with her most beloved nieces and nephews and their children.

Gifted with a brilliant mind, Dorothy graduated Valedictorian from high school, going on to earn Magna Cum Laude distinction in Mathematics at Hardin Simmons University, graduating with the highest grade point average of the 1953 Class. She became a high school mathematics teacher and to this day receives notes of appreciation for the difference she made in her student's lives from all around Texas, including the Pasadena High School Independent School District.

In college and throughout life she was fun-loving and fiercely optimistic. She played ukulele, enjoyed bird-watching and playing softball in her youth; but most of all she loved her family, her precious "Jim". She was in her element when she was with her family. Her study of World History and the lineage of the kings of England ignited her inquisitive nature to document her family's ancestral stories. Volumes of treasured history provided in a fascinating storybook format, is her gift to her children and grandchildren.

She will be remembered for her ability to light up a room and create memories for everyone who knew her. Those who knew Dorothy would say her finest hour came with the courage, spunk and dignity that characterized her battle with cancer. Fiercely optimistic, her strength became legendary among other patients at the Baytown Texas Oncology Clinic for whom the family will be ever indebted for kindness and care beyond the call of duty.

Visitation will be held at Rosewood Funeral Home, 3939 Pasadena Blvd. in Pasadena, Texas on October 3, 2012 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM; with funeral services slated for Thursday, October 4, 2012, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of La Porte, 310 S. Broadway, La Porte, Texas. Donations in her honor may be mailed to First Baptist Church of La Porte at P.O. Box 2075, La Porte, Texas 77572.

Although I don't know any of the family personally, I can't begin to tell you how much your wife/mom influenced me and my life. I had her for a teacher at SRHS in the 1970-73 time era, and can honestly say she was one of the best teachers I ever had. I loved being a student and standing at the door with her and Mrs Carroll (then)and talking and joking with them. She didn't treat me as just a student, but as a friend! That was probably the first time in my life I knew a teacher was more than just a teacher - she could be a friend also.

Even when I no longer had her for a teacher, we continued to be friends. I was even amazed to find that you lived around the corner from me on Merle St in Pasadena...funny how you don't expect teachers to live anywhere, lol. I never became a teacher, but if I had, I would have structured my classes like Ms. Alexander did - after all, who doesn't want to have a "Pink Tea Party" every Friday!

I am so sorry for your loss, but take comfort in knowing she will continue to have influence in many of her former student's lives! She was a shining example for anyone to follow!

God Bless you all!

A great lady, mathmetician, educator and mentor (before it was fashionable). Although she has gone to be with her Maker, she will never be truly gone from this earth, as her influence will be felt in many generations to come.
