Horace Alder Obituary
ALDER-Horace Byron "Hod" Alder, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2009 of complications of old age. He was born August 6, 1913 in Logan, Utah the only son of Byron Frederick and Jennie Mae Westenskow Alder. From his parents he learned industry and hard work, and developed a passion and talent for carpentry. He earned a BS degree from Utah State University and an MBA from Stanford University. Horace met the love of his life, Lorene Isakson of Sal t Lake City, Utah, while working at the Grand Canyon. They married in 1940, then moved to California to pursue a DDS degree from USC. Hod served his country in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, stationed in San Diego and aboard the S.S. Hanford. With his wife and family he moved to the Pasadena area, establishing a dental practice which he pursued until retirement in 1992. Hod's many years of service to the community included membership in the Y's Men's Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the Tournament of Roses Association. He lived an active life, regularly participating in golf and bowling, and traveled extensively throughout the world with Lorene, often to attend Y's Men's Club conventions. Most of all, he loved his family, and together with Lorene, opened their gracious home for numerous social functions as well as visits from family members, friends and international visitors. Many have benefited from their generous and loving hearts. Hod is survived by his wife; two daughters, Janice (Kenn) Smith an d Barbara Alder; three sons, Ralph (Gracie) Alder, Byron (Judy) Alder, and John (Debbie) Alder; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, and is remembered fondly by friends too numerous to count. His only sister, Dorothy Porter, died at the age of 90. We'll miss you, DAD.A private interment will be held at Live Oak Memorial Park, with a memorial service on Saturday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6248 Kauffman, Temple City. In lieu of flowers the family woul d welcome donations to the Pasadena Y's Men's Club Endowment Fund, PO Box 2233, Pasadena, Ca 91102-2233 or the Alzheimer's Association.
