Norman Clement Obituary
In Loving Memory of NORMAN CLEMENT Sept. 29, 1920 - Oct. 20, 2004 Norman Parsons Clement, Jr. died last week at the age of 84. According to family members, he died peacefully at his home in Montecito, California from complications following a heart attack. Mr. Clement joined the international executive search firm of Korn/Ferry International as a senior partner in 1972 shortly after it was formed, and served in its Los Angeles office for nearly thirty years until his retirement. While at Korn/Ferry, he had a broad range of management responsibilities, and handled importa nt client relationships with both corporate and not-for-profit organizations. He was particularly respected for his role as a mentor to a number of Korn/Ferry partners, and he represented the firm as an active leader in the Los Angeles community. Born in Buffalo, New York as the youngest of four brothers, Mr. Clement attended Park School and Nichols School there. He graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and then attended Yale University where he cultivated his life-long interest in swi mming under Coach Bob Kiphuth. After graduating from Yale in 1942, he married Elizabeth ("Lisa") Gorham of Albany, New York. During World War II, he served as an officer in the United States Navy and skippered three minesweepers in the Pacific. After the war, he received an MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar. He went to work at the Globe Store in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and then became a partner in the New York office of the international management consulting firm of Cresap, McCo rmick & Paget. In 1962, when Mr. Clement was asked to head Cresap's Los Angeles office, he moved his family from Rye, New York, to Pasadena, California. His consulting assignments included analyzing the tourism industry for the governments of Israel, South Africa and the State of Alaska. Upon leaving Cresap, he served as an advisor to the Council for Opportunity in Graduate Management Education (COGME), a consortium of nine U.S. business schools underwritten by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation that was estab lished to provide financial and academic resources to encourage minority students to seek managerial positions in business. He then joined Korn/Ferry in 1972. Mr. Clement was a founding member of the Institute of Management Consultants, and a founding officer of the California Executive Recruiters Association. For several years, he served as a visiting lecturer at the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. He was also an active board member of several educational and philanthropic organiza tions, including the Constitutional Rights Foundation, the Metropolitan YMCA, the Episcopal Church Foundation, the French Foundation (for Alzheimer's research), the Bishop Stevens Foundation, Pacific Oaks College and Children's School, the Alumni Association of the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Business School Alumni of Southern California Scholarship Fund. An ardent fan of classical music, Mr. Clement loved the opera and supported the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Santa Barbara Symphony . He also enjoyed antique automobiles. He was a member of the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena, where he served as its president in 1976-77, and was also a member of the California Club in Los Angeles. Mr. Clement is survived by his daughter Leelee of Pasadena CA, his son Gus of Biloxi MS, his son Dan of Pacific Palisades CA, and his seven grandchildren. His wife Lisa predeceased him in 1994. Memorial services will be held on Friday, November 19, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 1325 Monterey Road, South Pasadena CA; and on Saturday, November 20, 2004 at Casa Dorinda, 300 Hot Springs Road, Montecito CA. The family has suggested that donations be made in his memory to the Constitutional Rights Foundation, 601 South Kingsley Drive, Los Angeles CA 90005; the Clement Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Hill School, 717 East High Street, Pottstown PA 19464; the Ronald Reagan Foundation, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley CA 93065; or the Santa Barbara Symphony, 1900 State Street, Suite G, Santa Bar bara CA 93101.
